Warren Applegate In 1960 Warren graduated from Campus High School in Haysville, KS as a 3-year varsity letterwinner in wrestling. He entered the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam with distinction as a Dustoff (Medevac) pilot. Warren served as the head coach for the freestyle and greco wrestling teams at the U.S Army Primary Helicopter Flight School. From 1971-1974 he served as an assistant wrestling coach for the University of Oklahoma with OU winning the NCAA team championship in 1974. After completing his BBA at OU in 1973 he moved back to his hometown of Wichita, KS and served as a volunteer coach at Kapaun-Mt.Carmel Catholic High School. The team was undefeated in dual meets during that 4-year period and won the only two Grand State Championships ever held in 1975 and 1976. He completed graduate work in real estate at Wichita State University in 1978, and moved to Phoenix, Arizona. Warren was a senior analyst with Ralph J. Brekan & Co. Inc. as a commercial appraiser specializing in golf course market & feasibility studies. He was a volunteer assistant wrestling coach from 1988-1990 at Gilbert Mesquite Junior High. Warren moved to Scottsdale AZ in 1990 and started a youth wrestling program for the Parks & Recreation Department. Warren served as the head wrestling coach for Saguaro High School from 1992-1994. Since 1994 he has coached a youth wrestling program for Brophy College Preparatory (Jesuit) in Phoenix and helps coach the off-season freestyle program. Warren was Commissioner of Wrestling for the Grand Canyon State Games from 1994-2003 adding Folkstyle, Greco-Roman & Veteran's competition and was selected Co-Commissioner of the Year in 2002. Ollie Cooperwood Ollie graduated in 2001 from Maple Heights High School,OH, a school with a long, rich wrestling tradition. Ollie was an All-League, varsity wrestler and a State qualifier. He was an Ohio State Freestyle Champion and wrestled for the All-Marine Team. He is currently the Head Coach of the Marine Team at the Marine Corps. David Curby Dave graduated in Physical Education from the University of Michigan in 1975, earned an MS in Physical Education, and a doctorate in Educational Psychology from Northern Illinois University in 1993. He was a four year starter on University of Michigan Wrestling Team - Elected Captain senior year. Junior National Champion, Espoir National Champion, 4th place in Junior World Tournament, Big Ten Champion, & All-American. Dave began his professional career as a Physical Education Teacher and Coach at Lyons Township High School, LaGrange, IL, where he was also Department Chair of Physical Education and Health. In 1990-91 Dave and his family spent a year in Helsinki, Finland as a Fulbright Scholar. He was Director of Physical Welfare at Niles North High School in Skokie, IL, from 1994-2001. Presently he is Lead Teacher for Physical Education at Niles. Dave has published research on physical self-perception, adolescent power production, and energy expenditure in wrestling. He is a USA Wrestling Gold Certified Coach and has his CSCS from the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Philip Davanzo III In 1998 Phil was a New York State Runner-up for Vestal High School. While at NC State University he was a member of the 2X Defending ACC Champions. From 2000-2005 he was the Head Wrestling Coach of the Capital City Wrestling Club (Raleigh, NC) where he coached 35 State Qualifiers, 12 State Place Winners, three State Champions, an Academic-All American and a 2x All-American (Junior High School Nationals and a National High School Open). He was an Assistant Wrestling Coach at Millbrook High School (NC) from 1999-2005 and an Assistant Coach for the Central Region Wrestling Team at the Empire State Games (NY) in 2000. Greg DeMarco Greg was a New York State Wrestling runner-up for Amityville High School when dinosaurs roamed the earth. He wrestled several years for Rutgers University and in 1969 became the head coach of Madison Township High School (NJ), now called Old Bridge High School. He was an assistant coach at Middlesex County Community College for three years and then returned to high school coaching in 1983 at East Brunswick High School until 1987. Greg has written several articles for Wrestling USA magazine and served as its NJ state editor. He founded both the Old Bridge Mat Rat Kid's Wrestling program and the East Brunswick Wrestling Club. He was the director of numerous wrestling tournaments including the Middlesex County Tournament, the Top of the East Tournament and was the founder and director of the Old Bridge Wrestling Festival from 1976 to 2002. In 1996 he was awarded the prestigious Harry Lake Award for contributions to New Jersey Wrestling. After 34 years as a high school math and computer science teacher in Old Bridge he retired and moved to St. Petersburg, FL. Greg is the founder and webmaster of WrestlingAssistant.com. Jack Fitzpatrick Jack graduated in 1992 from Archbishop Wood High School, in Warminster, Pennsylvania. He placed second at the National Prep Wrestling Tournament at Lehigh. Jack was a two time league champ, while also lettering two years in soccer. He attended and wrestled for Trenton State College, now The College of New Jersey. Jack took over the Head Coaching position in 2004 at Archbishop Wood, after being an assistant there for 7 years. Bruce Gabrielson Bruce Gabrielson hails from a long-time Oregon wresting family and competed successfully at Madison High School in the early 1960s before obtaining a wrestling scholarship and moving on to a highly successful college career at California State University Long Beach. He served as asst. coach under while in graduate school at Long Beach as he prepared for the 1968 and 1972 GR Olympic Trials. He coached the Costa Mesa Athletic Association Freestyle team during the late 60s and early 70s and was the Coach and Captain of the US Army Team at Fort Ord while serving in 1969. He helped coach US Air Force National Team members stationed at Norton AFB in the mid to late 70s. Coach G moved to Maryland in the early 1980's and started coaching junior league teams where his sons were wrestling. During the 1980's he founded the Southern Maryland Wrestling Club and created the Club's website, the first site on the Internet devoted to wrestling. Under Bruce's guidance the SMWC won 28 AAU Grand National Team titles plus numerous regional and state titles. Bruce was active with a number of high school programs over the years including Huntington Beach HS, Fountain Valley HS, Calvert HS, the Suitland HS Rams and DeMatha HS. A USAW Copper level coach, Bruce was one of Maryland's USAW National Team coaches each spring season. In 1999 and 2000 his youth league team won the CAWL League Championships and finished with the MD/VA Beltway team championship in 2000 when he retired. He was the Head Coach of Maryland's Potomac Valley All-Star Challenge Cup Team for 16 years, the Maryland Head Coach of the MD/VA Senior All-Star Match Team for three years, and the Head Coach of Maryland's AAU Junior Olympic Multi-Sport Team several years. During the summer and early fall he presented clinics or rans sessions at local and regional camps, including Ken Chertow's Camp of Champions. He was an AAU Official and AAU Pairer, plus a USAW Official. Bruce was a newspaper sports editor for wrestling and contributed as a State Editor for WUSA Magazine, as well as having written over 60 wrestling articles for various publications since 1970. He won several age group regional and national titles in freestyle, folkstyle, Greco-Roman, and Sombo over the years, retiring from regular active competitions after a shoulder injury in 1997. Bruce coached both Sombo and Judo and has published a book on Sombo wrestling. He has two sons, Jason and Kevin, and a daughter, Tarin, all of whom were very successful wrestling, Judo, and Sombo competitors. James Johnson James Johnson is a Registered Clinical and Certified Sports Nutritionist with the Paidotribe, LLC that provides clinical and sports nutrition services to athletes and individuals. He is a Sunkist Kids Wrestling Sports Consultant, National Coach Coach/ Advisor, Advisor and Distributor for the Oxy-Water Corporation, and an Elite Sports Specific Trainer for athletes in the NBA, NFL, MLB, as well as several Olympic contenders. Before developing Paidotribe, LLC., James served as a Public Relations/Community Speaker for Sunkist worldwide. He had appeared as a guest on numerous cable television broadcast, radio programs, school events, and civic and government programs regarding education, fitness, sports, and youth. Zeke Jones Zeke is the Assistant Head Coach at West Virginia University and In his six years with the Mountaineers, WVU has produced 39 NCAA qualifiers, 11 EWL tournament champions, seven All-Americans and two individual national championships. He was the Head Coach for the 1999 World Cup Team, 2001 USA World Team and the 2003 Pam American Games Team. He was a member of the Olympic Freestyle wrestling coaching staff for the 2004 United States Olympic team. He has competed all over the world and is recognized as one of the top wrestlers at 114.5 pounds. His list of accomplishments include a silver medal in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, a gold medal at the 1994 Goodwill Games in St. Petersburg, Russia, and a first-place finish at the 1991 World Freestyle Wrestling championships in Bulgaria. He is one of only two Americans to be honored as the "Most Technical Wrestler in the World" by FILA, the Federation for International Wrestling. Jones came to WVU from Arizona State, but before his tenure with the Sun Devils, he coached two years as an assistant coach at Bloomsburg. He is currently a coach of the Sunkist Kids Club. A 1990 graduate of Arizona State, Jones was a three-time All-American; his 134 wins rank third on the school's all-time win list. He holds the ASU record for most dual match victories in a season with 22 (1989-90). While wrestling at ASU, Jones won three Pac-10 championships at 118 pounds and was runner-up at the 1990 NCAA championship after an undefeated season. While a coach at Arizona State, Jones help lead the Sun Devils to a 60-37 record and four Pac 10 titles. He is one of the top 100 athletes of all-time as selected by The Arizona Republic. In July of 2003, Jones was named to the Amateur Wrestling News ASU's Modern-Era Mat Team. Amateur Wrestling News selected Arizona State's wrestling program for a continuing series that looks at the top competitors in a selected programs' history. Jones was selected among the first-team selections at 118/125 pounds. A native of Ann Arbor, Mich., Jones wrestled to a 111-6 record while at Huron High and was a three-time prep All-American. He is a member of the Huron High Hall of Fame, the Michigan Wrestling Hall of Fame and was named to the "Dream Team" by Wrestling USA. Vic Lorenzano Vic Lorenzano graduated from Cathedral High School in Indianapolis, one of Indiana's long time wrestling powers and top educational institutions. He came to Florida from Waldron High in Waldron, Indiana, where he started that program after graduating from Hanover College in 1982. His 1985 team captured the Shelbyville Sectional in dramatic fashion, compared in many newspapers throughout the state as David slaying Goliath. Waldron had an enrollment of 262 students in grades 6-12. Indiana has no class system for wrestling, so the teams they defeated had enrollments exceeding 2,000 students. Lorenzano then moved to Florida and started the wrestling program at Gateway High School in 1987. The Panthers won four consecutive District titles beginning in 1991 and had two top ten finishes in the state meet. He was the athletic director and wrestling coach at Gateway High School from 1990-95 before assuming the same roles at St. Cloud in 1997. In between he was the assistant wrestling coach for two years at St. Cloud. Over 100 of Lorenzano's wrestlers have reached the state tournament, three claimed championships and ten runner-ups. At St. Cloud, his teams have captured ten Conference Championships, eleven District Championships, two Region Championships, four top ten finishes, including third place in 2005 and the 3A State Championship in 2002, the margin of victory just a 1/2 point. Many of Lorenzano's wrestlers have gone on to college to further their education and also compete. Among them, Nick Lorenzano, his son and a 2-time state placewinner in Florida, who helped the team capture the title in 2002, is now competing for nationally ranked University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Lorenzano is the Florida Athletic Coaches Association wrestling chairman and a member of several national wrestling organizations, including serving as state rep for the National Wrestling Coaches Association. He is a charter member of the USA Wrestling national education initiative, started in 1985, and he has been an assistant on USA Wrestling international exchange teams. In addition he supervises the St. Cloud Wrestling Club and has been selected as the Osceola County Coach of the Year three times, the Florida 3A Coach of the Year in 2002, and the overall Florida State Coach of the Year in 2002. Keith Manos Keith has been honored as Ohio's Wrestling Coach of the Year in 1988 and Ohio's English Teacher of the Year in 2000. During his coaching tenure he has been named Head Coach of the USA All Star Wrestling Team (1989), Head Coach of the Ohio All-Star Wrestling Team (1991), and Head Coach of numerous all star wrestling teams in the Cleveland and Toledo areas. In a thirteen year coaching career, 29 of his wrestlers qualified for the State Tournament where three won individual titles and 16 others placed. He has authored eight books for teachers and coaches, along with nearly a hundred articles, while conducting in-services and coaching clinics for schools across the Midwest. His newest books include 101 Wrestling Drills and Games and 101 Ways to Motivate Athletes. This fall he begins his 29th year of teaching. Jon McGovern Jon has been the Head Wrestling Coach at University of Dubuque (IA) since 2002 where he also serves as the advisor for both the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Student Athlete Advisory Council. Prior to that he was the assistant wrestling coach at the University of Chicago ('01-'02), an Olympic Training Center Resident Athlete ('99-'01), an assistant wrestling coach at University of Pennsylvania ('98-'99), George Mason University ('97-'98) and the University of Virginia ('96-'97). Jon's wrestling experience began at Riceville, Iowa where he was a 4X State Qualifier and 3X state placewinner. Ray Nunamaker Ray retired in1997 after 34 successful years of coaching wrestling at Nazareth High School in Pennsylvania. Ray's teams never had a losing season and compiled a record of 468-95-7. In his last ten seasons of coaching, Ray's teams never finished out of the top five in the "big" school State Championships, they were state runner-up seven of those seasons, and were nationally ranked from 1990-97. He was voted the Pennsylvania Coach of the Year by his peers 4 times, and is a member of the Pennsylvania Wrestling Hall of Fame. Dan O'Cone Dan is the Head Wrestling Coach at Brick Memorial High School (NJ) and President of the New Jersey Wrestling Coaches Association. Doug Reese Coach Reese has a long history of wrestling coaching experience on the international, college and high school levels. He is a Gold Certified coach in USA Wrestling's National Coaches Education Program. He was recently selected as the head wrestling coach at King College in hopes of building a nationally ranked program from the ground up with the start of the 2005-2006 season. Reese, a native of Geneva, IL and a graduate of Northern Michigan University, most recently served as assistant to the Athletic Director and Head Wrestling Coach at the University of Minnesota-Morris. He coached both the men's and women's wrestling teams there, and worked for UM-Morris from 1991-2004. Since 2000, Reese has served as Executive Director of To The Next Level Sports Network, a worldwide internet sports ministry. Reese is an accomplished writer, he is author of the book, "Take It To The Next Level, Performance Principles for Life," and was contributing editor of "nt:sport - The Word of God for the World of Sport Bible". Reese has also published over three dozen articles on training athletes for competition. He has been published by W.I.N. Magazine, Wrestling USA Magazine, Scholastic Coach, Sport Outreach Scotland Magazine, The Complete Coach Magazine, Gut Wrenching News, Crossface Magazine, and his sport devotionals have been a regular feature on the Christian Broadcasting Network website. Richard Rockwell Rich was a state qualifier in Oregon from Riverside High School in Boardman, OR and wrestled at Yakima Valley Community College. He wrestled in many open tournaments including the Northwest Olympic Qualifier in 2000 at Oregon State University. He is currently an Assistant Wrestling Coach at Riverside High School, Head Junior High Wrestling Coach at Riverside and Pirate Wrestling Club coach. This will be his 12th year of coaching. He has helped coach 20 state placers, 35 state qualifiers at two different high schools and was part of a state championship team. The wrestling club currently has over 100 wrestlers and has had several state placers already in only their 5th year. Rich currently maintains two statewide websites in OR and WA and prints two wrestling publications in both states as well. He is the Oregon state editor for Wrestling USA magazine. John Sacchi In 2007 John Sacchi retired as head wrestling coach at Rutgers University after coaching for 40 years, including the last 17 at the helm of the Scarlet Knights program. John had an astonishing 447-162-9 career record, making him the second winningest active coach in college wrestling at any level with regard to dual victories. A 1966 graduate of Ithaca College, Sacchi earned a master's of science from the University of Montana, where he began his coaching career. The Ithaca, NY native studied at the Moscow Institute of Physical Education and Sport. He also coached the victorious freestyle team at the 1982 Junior Pan American Games and the 1991 United States Junior College Wrestling Team in an international meet in Madrid. A member of the U.S. Marine Corps from 1958-1961, Sacchi is a former Vice President of the National Junior College Wrestling Coaches Association. He was an assistant athletic director while at Middlesex, where he was a professor of Health and Physical Education. Milt Sherman Milt had a collegiate record of 101-13 (88%) at East Carolina University. As a former All-American, he scored wins over NCAA champions Mike Frick (Lehigh) and Gary Barton (Clarion) as well as Korean national champion Kyung Mu Chang (4th in World). Milt also defeated NCAA runner-ups Marty Willigan (Hofstra) and Brian Beatson (Oklahoma). He had the distinction of wrestling on ECU'S 1973 team which won all 10 weight classes at the North Carolina Collegiate Championships. As a coach, when he retired in 2004 Milt ranked second all-time in North Carolina wins (470-114-5 80%). While at D.H. Conley High School in Greenville, NC he coached a state championship team and three state runner-up teams. He has had 43 All-state wrestlers including 13 state champions and 5 high school All-Americans. His top athlete, James Johnson, went on to win three Open Division National Championships at Greco-220 and place 5th in the 1994 World Championships. As an author, Milt has had more than twenty articles published in Coach, Amateur Wrestling News, W.I.N. and Wrestling USA. He is a member of both the East Carolina University Athletic Hall of Fame and the North Carolina chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. Brian Smith Currently the head coach at Bellingham High School (WA), Brian has spent 10 years as a head coach splitting this time at two different high schools. He has been privileged to coach 62 high school state qualifiers, 18 state placers and 3 state champions in his tenure. He has had 4 teams earn distinguished academic honors as well as 4 individual Academic State Champions. Brian's off-season is spent as the head coach of "The Sons of Thunder" wrestling club, where his focus is on promoting all age levels in all styles of wrestling. He is currently an applicant Silver Level Coach through USA Wrestling. Rick Tribit Rick began wrestling in New Castle, DE for Jeff Mack at Gunning Bedford Middle School in 1976 where he also wrestled for the William Penn's Wrestling Club. He moved to Florida in 1979 and wrestled for Bob Walker (1979 GR 3rd World Championships) and Ethan Reeve (3x NCAA AA at Tennessee) at Seminole High School. Rick went on to wrestle at Carson-Newman College and University of Central Florida before the program was dropped to Title IX. He served as an assistant coach at Dixie Hollins High School in St. Petersburg, FL 1988-89; Head Coach at Lyman High School (90-93), Oviedo High School (93-97), and Winter Springs High School (97-Present). In 2002 his team finished 1.5 points behind St. Cloud in 3rd Place at State Tournament. Over 100 wrestlers have made it to the state championships, with 5 State Champions, several All-Americans and numerous Conference, District and Region Champions. Greg Troxell Greg was a 1990 National Honor Society graduate of Phillipsburg High School, NJ. He earned three varsity letters in football and four in wrestling. In his final two seasons he amassed an incredible 65-0 record on his way to winning two New Jersey State championships. Greg was named to the Asics Tiger High School All-American Wrestling Team (1st Team), Parade Football All-American status (1st Team), USA Today Football Team Member (2nd team) and the prestigious New Jersey Gatorade Player of the Year award which is given to one football player in each state. He continued his career upon accepting a full football scholarship to Penn State University. During his four years at Penn State, Greg earned three football letters and three wrestling letters. He made two trips to the NCAA wrestling championships and was ranked as high as 7th in the country. He was the head wrestling coach at Phillipsburg High for four years. Prior to that, he was an assistant at PHS for five years. During his tenure as head coach, he was named District Coach of the Year in 2000, 2002 & 2003. His teams finished as Group IV State Champions in 2000 and 2003 and runner-ups in 2001 and 2002. Chad Tunink Chad was an Iowa High School State place winner while attending Perry High School. He was a Division III All-American at Buena Vista College as well as a 3x Academic All-America. Chad served as head wrestling coach at Panorama High School, Panora, IA and at Pella High School, IA. He is currently co-coach at High Altitude Wrestling Freestyle Club and works for J. Neil Turner Neil Turner's notable and distinguished career has led him to coaching assignments at Altoona HS, Thaddeus Stevens, Clarion University, Athletes-in-Action, Clearfield HS, Lock Haven University and Messiah College all located in the wrestling-rich Pennsylvania. Coach Turner has trained wrestlers at every level: youth, high school, college, and post college. He is currently the director of Mat-Town USA Wrestling Club located in Lock Haven, PA. Stan Tzogas Stan was the head coach of Canada's 2004 Olympic Greco Roman team. He is based at the Team Impact Wrestling Club in Toronto and was head coach of Canada's first place team at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester. He's responsible for the development of numerous wrestlers in Canada's national program and is currently collaborating with the Canadian Sport Centre Ontario in the delivery of a high performance program in Toronto.
