Constant Movement
by Bill Smith - former head coach Hammond High Wrestling, Columbia, MD
We started "Constant Movement" as a conditioning activity and it evolved into an "Everything" gem. In exercise lines we begin by jogging in place. We jog throughout this activity. We start by calling out exercises such as, "20 push-ups - GO!" and include crunches, tuck jumps, high knees, hit-its (up-downs or Lombardi's), etc.
We then go to partner activities with 5 seconds to pick a partner. With partners we do 10 each of the following:
- Airplane Shots - One guy is on his knees with his arms held out to the sides. Partner shoots a High Croth under each arm in a circling motion.
- Double Leg with finishes
- High Crotch with finishes
- Single Leg with finishes
- Inside stand-up
- Switches, etc.
Next we sometimes go back to individual activities to do a 6 minute session of "Move-Shoot-Sprawl" using the following commands:
- Move - Everyone moves around in a good stance.
- Level - Short for "Level Change"
- Shoot - Everyone would perform a shot with proper form against air and return quickly into a good stance.
- Sprawl - Everyone would perform a sprawl with proper form against air and return quickly into a good stance.
An example of a sequence is "Move, Move, Level, Move, Shoot, Move, Sprawl, Sprawl, Sprawl, Shoot, Shoot." This activity ensures that we can weather a storm of shots with repeated sprawls and when it's needed we can attack with a flurry of shots.
Within this Constant Movement activity we can include short time scrimmages, pyramids and situtational live wrestling as well. Coaches can modify this activity and try different things to meet their specific needs.
