Wrestling Club Tips

The coaches from the "Art of Coaching" wrestling forum on TheMatForums.com have some good advice for those coaches who are forming a wrestling club:

  1. Make it FUN!
  2. Conduct two or three practices per week.
  3. Each practice should be no more than 1.5 hours.
  4. Practice should be fairly structured with time at the end for scrimmaging.
  5. Work on just a few techniques at each session and perfect them.
  6. Start the club season off in a big way by bringing in a top clinician, such as a former Olympian or National Champion. It is important ot begin with lots of wrestlers. Do everything you can to get as many kids to the first week of practice.
  7. Create a program that will provide your wrestlers with challenges, a sense of direction, a feeling of accomplishment and recognition for their achievements during the off-season regardless of their skill level. Here's how.
  8. Peak for a major tournament at the end of your club season.
