Banned Elsewhere, Compounds Still Used in U.S.

The U.S. toy industry said seven years ago, when the European Union first banned some phthalates, that it would voluntarily remove them from products for babies and toddlers. But last year, 15 of 18 vinyl bath toys, teethers that babies chew on and other toys purchased at U.S. stores contained the chemicals, according to tests by the activist organization U.S. Public Interest Research Group. One plastic book labeled "phthalate free" contained phthalates.

Orin Hatch protecting a drug smuggler

This is what GOP family values have come to. We now have self-proclaimed religious conservative Senators (yes, I know he's a Mormon - and he still plays the religious conservative card just like the fundamentalists) using political pressure to get drug smugglers off the hook.

The Senate agrees to Imprisonment without Charges

How can the Senate vote to ban habeas corpus?!?

It makes no sense at all. It’s like voting for an end to freedom. And, yet, this is exactly what happened on Friday, November 11, when the Senate passed the (Lindsay) Graham amendment which overturns an earlier Supreme Court ruling (Rasul vs. Bush) allowing Guantanamo detainees to challenge their imprisonment in federal court. By a 49 to 42 margin the Senate approved the measure which effectively deprives them of the right to know why they are being held or of any legal means to defend themselves.
