Russert catches Cheney lying about Iraq and Al Qaeda on Meet the Press


Two days after the US Senate Intelligence Committee report stated categorically that there was no connection between Saddam Hussein and Al Qaeda leader Zarqawi, Cheney went on Meet the Press this morning and stated categorically that there was a link. When Russert pushed him and told him that the Senate report says he's wrong, Cheney replied that he hadn't seen the report. ThinkProgress has the video.

Gonzales: Bush Personally Blocked Security Clearances for Eavesdropping Probe


Attorney General Alberto Gonzales testfied before a Senate Committee today about the NSA warrantless electronic surveillance program. He made a startling admission: It was Bush himself who blocked Justice Department lawyers in the Office of Professional Responsibility from obtaining security clearances to conduct the investigation of the program that members of Congress had requested.

Today, May the 1st, is Law Day, celebrating the Rule of Law, which, under this Administration, has been honored more in the breach than the observance. Indeed, this article by Charlie Savage in the Boston Globe points out that:
President Bush has quietly claimed the authority to disobey more than 750 laws enacted since he took office, asserting that he has the power to set aside any statute passed by Congress when it conflicts with his interpretation of the Constitution. Among the laws Bush said he can ignore are military rules and regulations, affirmative-action provisions, requirements that Congress be told about immigration services problems, ''whistle-blower" protections for nuclear regulatory officials, and safeguards against political interference in federally funded research.

Army Confirms: Rumsfeld Authorized Criminal Conduct


Today the Army filed criminal charges against Lt. Col Steven L. Jordan, a military intelligence officer who was second-in-command of interrogation operations at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. Charge III of the Army's Charge Sheet accuses Jordan of "cruelty and maltreatment," based on the allegation that he subjected Iraqi detainees subject to his orders "to forced nudity and intimidation by military working dogs."
