Journal - Internet Access, 24 August 2003

We now have internet access - hooray!

Well hoorayish. It's so slow that although we have had it for a week, it has taken me this long to write about it!

One of the popular forms of internet access in Thailand involves buying a card with login details on it that entitles the user to a number of hours online. This is quite good as it lets you try out the different ISPs before you sign on the dotted line.

So I bought a 10 hour card for about 89 baht (£1.40 approx), got it home, set it up and dialled in. On the first attempt the voice on the other end of the modem informed me that the number did not exist. So I tried the second number and online we went, at 28 kbs!

Receiving email is very slow, surfing the web is even worse, and trying to upload these pages is just indescribable! I have pictures to add to the Gallery but I just can't bear the thought of being online all night to do it. It takes me several attempts just to connect as the number is either 'nonexistent' or engaged.

We do have the option of putting a direct line into the apartment, which apparently speeds things up. And broadband is available but it is expensive and you can't stay online for unlimited amounts of time as you can in the UK.

With a high-speed connection at work and broadband ADSL at home, I have been spoilt for the last three years. I am sure that you will hear more about this!
