Sun - September 14, 2008I actually found chanterelles in the rain shadow of the coast range two weeks agoOne may have been a hedgehog. It's still dry and
hot out here, and unless I cross the coast range summit I don't really expect to
find many specimens. They were tasty though, even mixed with store bought
buttons.
Posted at 04:30 PM Imagine it all Wed - April 23, 2008Things continue to improve...on the mushroom front. These were in the mulch
about a yard down from the first ones we
found.
Posted at 05:54 PM Imagine it all Sun - April 13, 2008And then a couple showed up in the gravel on the way to the garden......and they were tasty. I'm guessing that we may
have kicked over a couple of others because of their proximity to the garden
gate, considering I found another small one this morning directly in the usual
leg swing.
Posted at 02:04 PM Imagine it all Mon - April 7, 2008I was hoping by now I'd be eating spring mushroomsBut there is still snow visible in the coast
range and our usual spots in the woods on our property show no signs of those
fungi that Brian Algren inspired me to hunt down, round up, slice, dice, and
saute, in The Long Afternoon of Earth, which is like so yesterday and worthy of
crimes against humanity charges in The Hague.
Posted at 04:59 PM Imagine it all Tue - April 10, 2007It's spring againMorels are beginning to poke up in their usual
haunts. I can now spot them when then are not yet a quarter diameter of a dime
and know where to look. I guess this means I have final gained a useful
skill.
Posted at 09:49 PM Imagine it all Thu - November 9, 2006Had a really good meal of Shaggy Manes a couple of weeks agoThey came up in the same basic area as last year,
but we had used that spot to stage gravel for building the new driveway past the
old house. These were strong shaggies and Jean spent much time brushing off the
grit. They were much firmer that the ones we had last year.
Posted at 05:12 PM Imagine it all Sat - May 13, 2006This year we had 6 or 7 meals and several flavoringsThey were everywhere, beginning in late March and
continuing through last weekend. Usually we don't even see them until Memorial
Day weekend, and never in the numbers we saw this year.
Posted at 02:41 PM Imagine it all Tue - November 1, 2005Shaggy Manes Near the Front DoorFall mushroom season has arrived again with
plenty of chanterelles in the Coast
Range.
The biggest surprise this fall though was a crop of Shaggy Manes that showed up in the gravel and around the spurge under the old apple on the west side of the house. Posted at 05:08 PM Imagine it all Fri - September 3, 2004Fall mushroom season arrived with the late August rain...I started growing shiitake and oysters last
fall because the last two or three years have been awful for chantrelles. There
had been a lot of logging in the areas I usually hunted and the rains had held
off until nearly frost, so the pickings were slim. Chantrelles are wonderful
mushrooms, easy to spot, hard to confuse with poisonous varieties, and when
conditions are right, you can pick 5-10 pounds in an hour. Around here they run
between 15 and 20 bucks a pound, so mushrooming is a good hike that is also cost
effective.
