OMP ORIGINAL COVERS

These cheesy images were made with an iMac 233 using an Agfa SnapScan 1212 that was thrown in for free with a MacMall purchase a few years ago. No color correction, no manipulation beyond simple cropping.

The front cover was a print collage and paste-up inspired by a running Ahab joke and the idea that whale deaths may be a protest by the intelligent mammals on the planet against cheesy American stupidity.

The back cover contains an actual quote from Berke Breathed that was in response to an obscenely insane mailing that I may one day post here as an example of how literary terrorism must be waged.

The One Minute President began in 1983 as a collaboration conducted on two typewriters. I believe Paul had a Smith Corona electric at the time, and I had a nearly worn out IBM Selectric II. When the first Mac came out, I bought one immediately, and the first complete draft of OMP was in MacWrite and fit on a single 400K floppy.

Our method was simple. We used the original One Minute Manager book as the jumping off point and worked on the fly. I'd write for awhile and send my stuff to Paul, who would veer off in his direction and send the package back to me, along with suggestions for changes to stuff I'd written. I'd incorporate his new material into MacWrite (later in Microsoft Word), add new material and send the whole thing back to him. This went on for several iterations until Paul flew up to Portland for a few days and we argued and bitched and came up with a final draft that no publisher in the known universe wanted to touch.

So we published it ourselves as part of Yossarian Universal News Service, before we were forced to go underground to hunt grubs for food. Here's the original logo for YU News Service that I made in MacPaint. It's difficult to see, but that's Snowden pushing the news out the asshole of the plane. That's right, Snowden was faking that injury, the goldbrick!
