TERM

DEFINITION

Veganic

Veganic ( from VEGetable and ORGanic ) is pertaining to manuring with material, which is purely vegetable organic ( excluded materials from veganic compost are:-

potato peelings,

haulms,

rhubarb,

tree leaves,

sawdust,

chippings,

thick deep

rooted weeds,

fruit tree and ornamental tree prunings and

evergreen leaves )

and combines this with the following features:

1. No digging, ie. surface cultivation only.
2. Non compaction of the soil is completely achieved by dividing the land into permanent garden beds. All work of cultivation, weeding, sowing and planting is done from the paths without treading on the soil of the beds.
3. Weeds are controlled by only cultivating the top 3 to 4 inches of soil. Then, weeds are removed immediately adjacent to the growing vegetable seedlings and a band of weeds is left between the rows to grow on briefly before being removed. This achieves a five fold purpose:
    

1. A miniature shelter belt is provided between the vegetable seedlings at a time when they need to be protected.
2. The soil is kept moist by shading, preventing it from caking, especially on heavy clays.
3. The force of heavy rain is broken and soil is not splashed onto the vegetable seedlings.
4. The two part weeding process spreads the actual work.
5. The fibrous roots of the annual weeds assist in creating a better crumb structure.
