This Offbeat Glossary shows in tabular form an alphabetical list of terms commonly encountered in writings about gardening, which exclude agrochemicals, together with some offbeat but interesting ideas.

DEFINITION

Pinching back

Pinching back. This describes the removal of the growing tip of a shoot to ensure the development of side shoots:-

Ageratum
antirrhinum
Carnation
Cosmos
Phlox
Salvia
Tagetes
Verbena
Dwarf-type dahlia and
Petunia,

or the complete removal of small side shoots to form "trunks" of tree-form specimens:-

Tomato
Chrysanthemum and
Fuchsia.
