This Offbeat Glossary shows in tabular form an alphabetical list of terms commonly encountered in writings about gardening, which exclude agrochemicals, together with some offbeat but interesting ideas.

Green Manure

Cover crops achieved by planting low- priced seed, which protects the soil surfaces from erosion. It acts as an insulating blanket, which encourages soil life activity in general and earthworms in particular, who bring minerals and nutrients to the surface from the subsoil. They are:-

Alfalfa ( Medicago sativa ),
Alsike clover ( Trifolium hybridum ),
Barley,
Black medic ( Medicago lupilina ),
Brome grass,
Buckwheat ( Fagopyrum esculentum ),
Cheat grass,
Comfrey ( Symphytum X uplandicum ),
Common clovers,
Cowpea ( Vigna inguiculata ),
Fava beans ( Vicia faba ),
Hairy vetch,
Italian ryegrass,
Kale,
Legume-Grass mixture,
Lespediza,
Lupins ( Lupinus angustifolius ),
Millet ( Millium effusum ),
Mustard ( Sinapsis alba ),
Phacelia ( Phacelia tanacetifolia ),
Rape,
Red clover ( Trifolium pratense ),
Rye ( Ecale cereale ),
Sorghum,
Soybeans,
Spring rye,
Sudan grass,
Sunflowers,
Winter rye
Winter tare ( Vicia villosa ) and
