Pollution Barrier Garden Use List

Plants with large horizontal leaves are effective in filtering dust from the environment, with mature trees being capable of filtering up to 70 per cent of dust particles caused by traffic. Plants can also offset the pollution effects of traffic. 20 trees are needed to absorb the carbon dioxide produced by one car driven for 60 miles.

x carnea 'Briottii' is dome-headed and densely leafed. "Horse Chestnut" for large gardens (Height 20 feet)

Alnus

glutinosa 'Imperialis' is a slender tree with finely cut foliage (Height 20 feet).

Amelanchier

Very hardy small trees with twiggy, low-domed crowns.
Quite fast growing (Height 20 feet).

Betula

"Birches" have beautiful bark on their trunks.
albosinensis var. septentrionalis, ermanii, 'Purpurea', 'Youngii', utilis and jacquemontii are 25 feet in height.
Their foliage is not dense with very light shade under them.

Caragana

arborescens 'Pendula' and 'Walker' are 7 feet in height as small weeping trees. "Pea-Tree".
Succeeds in poor soils and exposed sites.

Carpinus

betulus ("Hornbeam") can be used as a hedge.
'Fastigiata' and 'Frans Fontaine' are 25 feet in height, dense, compact and with a flame-like shape.

Catalpa

Low well-spreading well branched domed crowns on 20 feet high plants.

Crataegus

The "Hawthorns" are one of the last of the spring flowering trees. Amongst the hardiest and toughest - these 17 to 24 feet in height - trees thrive where few others will survive:
x lavalleei, laevigata 'Crimson Cloud', laevigata 'Paul's Scarlet', laevigata 'Rosea Flore Pleno', monogyna and persimilis 'Prunifolia'.

Davidia involucrata

"Handkerchief Tree" is named from the 2 large white bracts forming a canopy over the real flowers, which may appear in May on trees over 10 years old.
Conical tree 50 feet high

Eucalyptus (Evergreen)

parvifolia tolerates chalk soil with 50 feet height. Use for greenery in flower arrangements to keep it below 8 feet.
perriniana has 12 -30feet height and requires acid soil.

Fagus

"Common Beech" is native to the UK.
sylvatica is used for hedging and the following varieties can be used as lawn specimens in large gardens:- 'Asplenifolia', 'Black Swan', 'Dawyck', 'Dawyck Gold', 'Purpurea' and 'Riversii'. Any acid or alkaline soil except clay or waterlogged. With its shallow roots and heavy shade, it is difficult to underplant - use spring and winter bulbs.

Fraxinus

The "Ash" are fast growing and suitable for chalk and wet ground near rivers.
excelsior 'Jaspidea' and ornus reach 17 feet in height.

Gleditsia

The thornless varieties 'Shademaster' and 'Sunburst' have graceful pinnate yellow foliage that appears very late on these trees above 20 feet in height.

Laburnum

All parts of this genus are poisonous.

Malus

x sargentii is a large shrub up to 10 feet in height, and slow growing.
'Red Jade' is a round-headed tree with pendulous branches - 13 to 16 feet high.
'Royal Beauty' is a small pendulous tree.

Prunus

serrulata 'Okame' is a small bushy tree with carmine-pink flowers in March/April - 13 to 16 feet high.
