Water shoots Applied usually to epicormic shoots that frequently arise close to pruning wounds on tree trunks or branches.
Whip A young seedling or grafted tree without lateral branches.
Whorl The arrangement of three or more organs arising from the same point.
Widger A spatula-shaped tool used for transplanting or pricking out seedlings.
Wind-break Any structure but often a hedge, fence, or wall that shelters plants and filters strong winds.
Wind-rock The destabilising of a plant’s roots by strong wind.
Winter wet Excessive amount of water that accumulates in the soil during the winter months.
Woody Ligneous, a term describing stems or trunks that are hard and thickened rather than soft and pliable. (see Herbaceous.)
Wound A cut or broken area in a plant.
Wound paint A specialised paint applied to a cut surface of a plant after pruning.
