Ivydene Gardens Climber Plant Gallery:
Introduction

The Climber Site Map links you to the Plant Index Pages - which contain the direct link to the relevant plant description with its photos for each of the 71 CLIMBERS detailed in the other Climber Galleries - IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER.
The Sub Navigation Box in each Page also links you to these Plant Index Pages.

A Site Map can contain about 500 filenames before we run out of the page that is displayed. In order for this gallery to contain more than 500 plant names, I have created Plant Index Pages in Alphabetical Order to contain the Link to the relevant Climber Plant Description Page in another Photo Gallery (at this time it is the Climbers Gallery and the Clematis Gallery) and to its Flower Thumbnail in each of the Months that it flowers in this Gallery. New Climber Photo Galleries will be created as needed. This Gallery will contain a Flower Photo of every Climber from the other Climber Galleries in all the Flower Colour Comparison Pages for the months that it flowers.

Ramblers Scramblers & Twiners by Michael Jefferson-Brown (ISBN 0 - 7153 - 0942 - 0) describes how to choose, plant and nurture over 500 high-performance climbing plants and wall shrubs, so that more can be made of your garden if you think not just laterally on the ground but use the vertical support structures including the house as well.

Warning - Just as it is a mistake to try to keep a tiger in a dog's kennel, it can be a disaster to plant a rampant grower in a site that it will very quickly outgrow. Strong climbers, especially self-supporting ones (Ivy, Ampelopsis, Parthenocissus and Vitis), can quickly get to the eaves, where they may sabotage gutters, and if allowed to get onto the roof, distort or even dislodge tiling. Climbing roses must be supported by humans tying them to structures since the roses cannot do it themselves ( keep the top of the structures 3 feet below the eaves so that annual pruning can reduce the risk of the odd stem reaching the guttering!!).

There are 3 sectors on a house wall or high wall:-

The climbers in this gallery have been placed into one of these 3 heights with the Text Box Boundary in:-

This Gallery splits the climbers into their following ways of climbing:-

These are split into the following in the Comparison Pages:-

This plant gallery has thumbnail pictures of climber flowers in the following colours per month:-

If you click on a thumbnail another window opens with 9 larger images (Flower, Foliage and Form - for Flower, Foliage and Form pages) and the following plant description:-

Please close that window before clicking on another thumbnail.

The Site Map for Climber Plant Description Index pages and Flower Colour per Month Comparison pages with photo content gives you access to the above 9 larger images and plant description for all the plants detailed in the Plant Gallery in alphabetical order.

Together with the Plants, Companion Planting and Offbeat Glossary sections of this website, these photographs should aid your choice of plant for your garden.

These gallery photographs were provided by Christine Foord and they were photographed by Christine and Ron Foord.

I and Ivydene Horticultural Services are requesting the donation of the following free colour photographs of plants for display in this section:-

  • Flower - to show the shape and colour of the whole flower.
  • Foliage - to show the shape of the leaf and its colour. If its colour changes in the year, then a picture of each changed colour.
  • Form - to show the natural shape/growth habit of the whole plant. If the plant is deciduous, then one with foliage and one without.
  • Fruit - to show the shape and colour of the whole fruit/nut/seed produced after it has flowered.
  • Flower Bed - to show the overall effect of a group of plants together, preferably with the names of each of the plants displayed.

Each main photograph will be displayed in a 150 x 150 pixels graphic item. Each thumbnail photograph will be displayed in 50 x 50 pixels graphic item. Freeway allocates 72 pixels per inch. The photographs require to be in :-

  • JPEG Format and can be sent via email (depress the email Chris Garnons-Williams item at the top of this page)
  • 35mm slide or normal photograpgh to be scanned in (send to Chris Garnons-Williams at 1 Eastmoor Farm Cottages, Moor Street, Rainham, Kent, ME8 8QE England)

Please give the Latin name of the plant and your contact details (It would be preferable that it is either your website or email address rather than your phone number). These will then appear with the relevant photograph with Anti-Spam software round the website or email contact details.

If you happen to be a Nursery, then this link could provide a means for people getting that plant; that they require.

WEBSITE USER INSTRUCTIONS

If a Plant Comparison Page or Wildlife on Plant Comparison Page has colour photographs of plants or wildlife on plants in it, then (o) is prefixed to that Comparison page title in the Navigation Box for that Section.

If you prefer not to see these photographs, then please admire the green background displayed in the other Comparison Pages!!!

Click on plant name below for photos and description in its Climber Description Page. Click on Back arrow to return to Site Map Page.

In order to compare climbers by their attributes (flower colour, foliage colour, form , fruit, or together with other plants), click on the appropriate attribute listed below the Site Map entry (the Comparison Pages are still under development, so some will have no photographic content and are therefore not listed in the Site Map). The text box below each thumbnail photo on each Comparison Page details the soil type, soil moisture, sun aspect, plant height and plant name.

You can obtain the Climber Description Page of a climber in addition to the Comparison Page by clicking on the thumbnail photo of that climber in that Comparison Page. Click on Red button to close Plant Description Page.

Why do so few climber nurseries who supply directly to garden owners in the UK and so few garden owners in the UK donate the use of their climber photos of the flower, foliage, form or fruit/seed to this website? Where else can you compare plants by flower colour, foliage colour, form or fruit/seed shape/colour with their soil type, soil moisture, sun aspect and height?
