Ivydene Gardens Case Studies:
Case 8 - Creation of Pond

According to Hadlow education, 50 square feet of surface area to a pond is the minimum required for it to be self-sustaining without the need for pumped filtration systems.

The shape of this pond was determined by the request of the client that the external shape should be a J with one of its sides and then follow through to the Ellwoodii Greyii Pear and Bird Bath, and my requirement that it should be at least 50 square feet of surface area.

The white perpendicula roll in the picture is a felt like plastic to prevent puncture of the butyl liner used as the flexible pond liner. The 30" maximum depth in the middle allows for pond lilies to sit at the bottom, the volume of water will not change temperature too much during a day and it is unlikely that during the winter that it will freeze right down to the bottom.

Metpost supports were inserted in the ground next to the fence to prevent that side of the pond from falling down into the the next door garden, with 6" by 1" tanellised wood between the posts and the pond. I have seen a 1" thick untreated staircase tread from a driveway to a flat roof entry rotted away from its support in less than 3 years. Any wood used externally for structural purposes must be treated against rot and insect attack with a guarantee certificate supplied.

Travis Perkins in supplying quality timber for joists and rafters of roofs, and Jacksons of Ashford guarantee their treated timber.

The yellow shingle area allows for bog garden plants to be planted in it. It thus will act as an overflow for the pond and from thence into the lawn alongside it.
