Ivydene Gardens Case Studies:
Case 6 - Vegetable Garden over 7 years

This vegetable garden of 34 feet long by 31 feet wide was at the end of the back garden of a detached house. The subsoil was chalk and so the garden soil was alkaline. I created the vegetable garden and grew the vegetables/fruit as part of a 1 day a fortnight maintenance program for the front and back gardens for 7 years.

The high-yielding vegetable seeds/potatoes were supplied by Marshalls each year. They provide an online catalogue as well as sending you one, which I receive in November. You order your summer/autumn growing seeds/young plants from this and your potatoes. When you receive the potatoes in December/January, put them into eggboxes in a cool room for them to chit, before planting them after the 3rd week in March. The seeds can be sown in trays and kept in the same room before planting them out in late May.

Marshalls also have a catalogue in July/August for Autumn/Winter vegetables, thus you could have fresh vegetables for Christmas and the winter months.

I bought the excellent fruit bushes, raspberries, strawberries, tayberries and loganberries from Ken Muir.

This vegetable garden was managed in an organic way by supplying it with compost each year and not using chemical sprays or fertilisers. It would have benefitted from using more companion planting techniques than French Marigolds and Horseradish, like having spinach planted everywhere before interplanting with the other vegetables and fruit.
