Chris Pirillo (second from left in the photo) was one of the panelists at November 11’s Music Tech Summit in Seattle (where I also recorded J Allard and Thomas Dolby).

His session with Christina Calio of Microsoft’s Zune project, Jessica Stoner of Pandora, and Bill Valenti of Melodeo was particularly useful for IHR listeners: they talked about how to promote and distribute your music in the new online environment. Chris, not being one who was selling anything, had some nice contrarian points to make, and he has posted my audio on his Chris Pirillo Show podcast—we’re linking to his copy of my recording, which also includes some of his personal announcements at the beginning. The episode is about 1 hour 10 minutes long.

On November 11, 2006, Derek attended the 2006 Music Tech Summit in Seattle, organized by the Pacific Northwest Chapter of the U.S. National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, which is best known for presenting the Grammy awards.

Although J Allard’s speech was the last one of the day, and I recorded all of them, the product he was talking about, Microsoft’s Zune portable media player, is being released on Tuesday, November 14, so we thought we’d post that audio first. Allard is the head of the Zune team (he started the Xbox project before that), and talks about his vision for the product and associated software, which Microsoft is creating to try to compete with the iPod and Apple’s iTunes and iTunes Store. The project only began in March 2006, and Allard compares the project to putting a band together.

The audio is 47 min 41 sec, and you can download the MP3 file (13.9 MB) directly. I recorded it using an 5th generation iPod with video, using a Belkin TuneTalk microphone adapter, and processed the audio with Rogue Amoeba Fission, Audacity, the Levelator, and iTunes. Enjoy.

If you use a Mac, did you know that Mac OS X has a built-in screen-zoom feature? It’s designed as part of the disabled-accessibility features of the operating system, but Paul finds it’s very useful for enlarging those teeny-tiny controls so many DAW and plugin manufacturers include with their products, especially on a large screen.

Check out the video (1 minute 3 seconds) to find out how to set the zoom up, and how Paul uses it.

UPDATE: When Apple released the Mac OS X 10.4.8 update at the end of September 2007, it included a nice preference setting to have zooming turned on by default, and controlled using your mouse scroll wheel.

You also might be very interested to see a super cool video presentation.

Overall: I thought it sounded very good and gives you very flexible control over the sounds, mixing of the kits, and effect settings. My only gripe was that it took way to long to load on in Mac OS X. When I used it in Win XP, it loaded much faster, leaving me wondering why that was?

James and Paul have produced a special report from NAMM 2006, which will bring you the latest in news, equipment previews, and events. Tune in the week ending January 21st as they bring you up-to-date on everything “home recording”.

Inside Home Recording reviewed 4 top virtual piano instruments on show #6 (IHR 01_06_06). The pianos were:

• Native Instruments, Akoustik Piano ($299*)
  - Synthogy, Ivory ($349*)

We also recorded Paul’s Yamaha upright piano in his living-room, using 2 Rode NT-2 microphones, straight into Digidesign Pro Tools M-Powered using an Ozonic k/b, ART Tube M/P, and PowerBook 12″ laptop. This allowed our listeners to hear what a real piano sounds like recorded into a DAW.

Paul and James were very impressed with all the instruments, however they both seemed to favor the sound and features of Synthogy’s Ivory, and made it their “Top Rated” piano. Rated “Best Overall Value”, was the Art Vista.
