Paul Garay buys himself a guitar

Over the June 10 weekend, Paul, whose expertise is in keyboards, bought himself an electric guitar (see photo). It is a Godin SD (in black), made by the Canadian Godin company in Quebec and Vermont, for use in his studio and to help him learn the instrument. (Derek also owns a Godin, in his case an LG model, which he bought last summer.)

Today Paul asked Derek about guitar tuner software for his Mac, since while GarageBand has a built-in tuner, launching such a big program just to tune up seems a bit of a waste of time. Together they found three options in a quick search, all from independent developers:

- Laidman and Katsura's wide selection of tuners and wave analyzers, for sale separately or as a bundle.

- The lovely gTuner , which has a great (and precise) full-screen mode that resembles a classic car speedometer. It's only $7 USD. This one is Derek's favourite.

- Alex Wilson's free Guitar Tuner.

Of course, a nice hardware tuner, pitch pipe, or tuning fork doesn't cost much from any music store either, and doesn't need your computer running to work.
