Herbert Benjamin Cheeseman

Herbert Benjamin Cheeseman was the oldest son of Alfred John and Jane Elizabeth Cheeseman. Born at Carngham in Victoria on 19 February 1871, he worked as a labourer, miner and carpenter and was married twice. His first wife was Elizabeth Haggis (1864-1901), the daughter of John Haggis and Mary Donelly, whom he married at Smythesdale in 1891. Elizabeth died ten years later from hydatids of the liver and acute peritonitis and was buried in the Roman Catholic section of the Carngham cemetery on 29 October 1901. She and Herbert had no children.

Herbert's second wife was Adelaide Lowe (1876-1960), the daughter of Tan Lowe (or Loo) and Jessie Buchanan. She was born at Beaufort on 13 March 1876 and married Herbert there in 1903. Herbert and Adelaide had five children we know of all born at Beaufort:

Elsie May Cheeseman (1904-83) who married Reginald Percival Hinchcliffe (1902-76) in 1927 and had two children: Heather and Neill Hinchcliffe.

Jessie Adelaide Cheeseman (1907-75) who married John Paynting (1905-72) in Melbourne in 1932 and had two children: Elsie and John Paynting.

Harry Cheeseman (1909-89) who married Mabel Gladys Quin (1906-99) in 1934. Mabel's grandneice, Leona Quin, tells us that Mabel was the youngest daughter of Frederick James Quin (1861-1926) and Alice Louisa Saunders (born in Scaresdale in Victoria in 1871) who were married in 1893. Mabel's siblings were: Wilfred Edward James Quin (born in 1894), John Bosworth Quin (1896), Alice Grace Dorothea May Quin (1898), Clare Marguerite Quin (1900), Walter Godfrey Quin (1902, Leona's grandfather) and Olive Rose Quin (1907). Leona adds that her grandfather, Walter Godfrey Quin, married Florence Ellen Conway and had three children: Walter Henry James Quin who had five children, all living, and lives in Albury NSW; Lillian Ellen Quin who has three girls; and Richard Godrey Quinn, Leona's father, who passed away a few years ago.

Harry and Mabel had two children: Lionel Barry Cheeseman who married Beverley Kean and Sonia Lorraine Cheeseman who married Ronald Hall.

Eric Ronald Cheeseman (1912) who married Kathleen Mary Wild (1914) and had two children we are aware of: Peter Gregory Cheeseman who married Jeanette Laidlaw and Jean Elizabeth Cheeseman.

Eva May Cheeseman (1915) who married Roy Hansford and had at least one child, Lynette Joy Cheeseman who married Barry Welsh.

Herbert died at St Vincent's Hospital in Melbourne on 23 December 1938 from the effects of tuberculosis and bronchopneumonia. His death certificate indictaes that he was 67 years old, worked as a labourer and normally lived at 67 Rossmoyne Street Thornbury in Melbourne. He was cremated at The Necropolis at Spring Vale on 26 December. The certificate, which was informed by Robert R. Rosan, an authorised agent, adds that he was born at Snake Valley and had spent 65 years in Victoria and two years in Western Australia. His wife Adelaide in Fitzroy in Melbourne, Victoria in 1960.
