Re: [Rollei] off topic- Zeiss binoculars

Terry,
It sounds like your binoculars are from some of the earlier Zeiss production
which began in 1894. A good indicator is the nature of the Zeiss logo. If
Carl Zeiss is written out in script them you can be reasonably sure that the
glass was produced no later than 1904 when Zeiss introduced the familiar
lens logo. The earliest designs are identified by strap lugs which are
screwed to the body rather than integrally cast into the body.
Additionally, if the hinge assembly is held to the binocular body by screws
rather than being integrally cast you have one of the earlier production
runs. Other clues include the use of the term "Feldstecher" which was
dropped from Zeiss binoculars about 1907. If you would care to send me a
little more information I will gladly date the item a little closer for you.
Serial numbers on the earliest glasses are not necessarily a clue to age
since it appears that Zeiss did not begin using a true sequential numbering
system until sometime after 1907.

The glass is an interesting example of Zeiss design and manufacturing
quality. Hold it in your hands and compare it to a current example and you
cannot help but be struck by the functional and cosmetic similarities.
After more than100 years of engineering evolution the original more than
holds its own with a modern binocular. This is a real tribute to the Zeiss
designers of the late 1800's. The binocular is not particularly rare since
so many were made, especially in the 8x20 size. I have several from this
era and paid between $50-$100 for each of them. Enjoy your piece of
history.

Regards, Jack
