Importing - Strata Units

Here's a secret you may have missed: Strata's internal unit is the point,
which is 1/72 of an inch. This comes from Strata's historical tie-in to
desktop publishing applications, specifically Illustrator.

"British" English

I can only assume that since America is the biggest World Power and that they are going for total world domination, their corrupted version of English is set as the default on a Mac even after having installing OSX for the first time and telling it you are British it still uses "English" (ie American English).
Read on to find out how to fix it....

Virsus on a Mac?

I don't think so... pretty much it's like George Bush's politics, based on fear, so Norton (mess up your computer) Anti virus want to make money out of your fear that you could get a virus. It's bollocks.

What's depressing is that PC user's paranoia can make a Mac user of many years phone me up and ask what AV software he should get even although he hasn't even seen a virus on a Mac in the last 10 years he has used a Mac!

Read on for further ammo to tell those PC users and lacking in confidence Mac users why they don't need AV or Spyware software.

Having just said all that I've just heard about a Trojan Horse called Leap-A that only works with Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger) more info here Does this mean Macs are getting more popular?

Retrospect is it useable?

Since moving from OS 9 to OS X Retrospect has been having problems. Where you could with OS 9 erase and restore an entire hard disk and have it running and recognising it's System folder with no worries at all, with the OS X version I wouldn't attempt it as I can't even get it to restore a simple application let alone the system folder.

With the latest update for OS X 10.4.1 Retrospect seems to be having a problem with Spotlight files which for some reason when Retrospect tries to back them up it crashes Retrospect. It is possible to filter these files out see Retrospect KB but even so it still isn't doing "what it says on the box" which is being a dependable backup system. One alternative is what is described by iGary posted on the Dantz Retrospect List read on....

The Holy Trinity - Unix Install app sequence

Submitted by Willy on Saturday, November 22, 2003 - 12:55
Over and over I have heard people say that you just use the usual configure, make, make install sequence to get a program running. Unfortunately, most people using computers today have never used a compiler or written a line of program code. With the advent of graphical user interfaces and applications builders, there are lots of serious programmers who have never done this.

OSX day to day user

Think for a moment about replacing the head gasket in an automobile engine; would a casual driver ever do that or be forced to? No. You move the levers, press the pedals and go - that's about as much complexity as most of us need. However, it *is useful* to know what is under that hood so that you don't pour kerosene in the tank or forget to change the oil for 3 years, and that's common-sense and maintenance that most of us can handle for day-to-day operation. And if we don't understand something, we can ask - like Ross did. (And cars, unlike computers, are truly dangerous things - data loss is nothing compared to some of those losses... sadly.)
