Retrospect - Recycling media back-up method
Should you later decide to: 5) Reprise the
letter, or something like that, then, 6) Retrospect will see that the file has
changed and back it up
again.
...Expanding our scenario to a
full hard drive with multiple programs/data files and given enough time, the
drive will fill--as you've experienced.... Therefore, C) You could put two
backup sets on the drive, or more optimally one on this drive and one on another
and then 'Rotate' between them.
1) You start a letter but can't finish it
because you are leaving for the day. No big deal, you save and
leave.
2) Retrospect Backs up the
file.
3) You come in the next day and finish
the letter. You think no more on this
subject.
4) Retrospect sees that the file
has changed. It backs that file up again. There are now _two_ letter files in
the backup. Should you later decide to:
5)
Reprise the letter, or something like that,
then,
6) Retrospect will see that the file
has changed and back it up again. You now have three letter files in your
backup.
Expanding our scenario to a
full hard drive with multiple programs/data files and given enough time, the
drive will fill--as you've experienced. You
can:
A) Schedule a Recycle backup every
night.
B) Schedule a Recycle every once in a
while as necessary. These two scenarios have the flaw that Dave mentioned
above. When you do the recycle, you are left with no backup for a short period
of time. Should the backup fail, you will not have a current backup.
Therefore,
C) You could put two backup sets
on the drive, or more optimally one on this drive and one on another and then
'Rotate' between them. Should the Recycle fail, you've still got a
backup.
Hope that helps. this needs to
be reiterated on the board every once in a while.
