Roy's Missive

At the Clonakilty Gathering, Roy handed out a few copies of a letter to us all. I hope he won't mind but I have copied it out here since I am sure you'll all be interested in what he has to say. I used OCR software on this, any errors are my own.

Roy Harper Single....

No, this is not a belated April Fool. I have some exciting news!...

--- New CD Single ---

Title: The Death Of God

Tongue in cheek? But how can it be? Our famous leader took us into an
illegal war and killed thousands of children. Was that cool? Or was it all
just a myth? Can he now lie to you about the economy, schools, hospitals,
human rights and everything else? Of course he can. He's done it all
before. We've all been there before. Do we have any option? Well... no.
Only to vote tactically. Five separate stories rolled into one. The
emigrant, the soldier, the bomber, the leader, and "God!" Dark satire..
all of it.

Catalogue No.: HUCD038
Label: Science Friction

Money in the Summer

Thanks for posting that Steve, its not one of Roy's songs that I've ever even thought of trying to work out. I tend to be attracted  to working on the songs with the twiddly guitar bits. I suspect this is cause a) I like em' and b) cos' it massages my guitar playing ego!!!

I've tweaked the line with the "numb'er" bit and added in "than in" after it which was missing from your original post. I've also tweaked the spacing of the chords annotation which has got a bit messed up with the vagaries of e-mail but I bet it will mess up again

Thanks again

Graeme

had this when I was part of the folky student population....

Good luck, Jim!   Cheers,  Chris

Death of God lyrics

Well here's my quick effort. The only bit that really baffles me (I hope)
is at 2 minutes 20. With a bit more thought I may want to repunctuate in
places but what is the end of that line - Mouthing the sounds of

Any help or corrections gratefully received.

Review - DOG, Levellers/Nick and Van Der Graaf Generator

It's been a long time since I've had three new releases to listen to all in one week that have truly excited me. I haven't been this happy since the weekend recently when I got to watch new Doctor Who and a live re-telling of the Quatermass Experiment and thus had something to watch live on TV on a Saturday night rather than running screaming from "talent", "reality" shows and other crassness :-) Here are brief impressions thus far:

Touch the Earth

Graeme M
Hi all

I know I have in my Harper collection somewhere a piece written by an
Indian Chief talking about how the White Man behaves using laws and
religion to suit his purposes but only when it suits him. Roy reads
this out just before he sings "I Hate the White Man" or maybe after
he's sung it not sure which.

Can anyone remember which album it's on?

Thanks

Graeme

Hello Cocklings

I finally got round to buying Nick's "Blood songs" and a mighty fine listen
it is too. My wife Gil has become rightly besotted with the song "imaginary
friend". I wondered if anyone has figured out the guitar chords for this
so's I can be all soppy and play it to her like..... :-~

Nick at King Tuts November 2004

Wow did Nick rock or what? Fecking excellent the best show I've seen him play!

The evening started with Beer Jacket (weird name) a guy I've not heard before. While I was listening to him my daughter Mhairi poked me in the ribs and said "isn't that Nick standing next to you?". I turned round and sure enough it was! BJ had a good voice but needs to loose the rather staid pullover which didn't go with his sound :-)

Nick at Pod Deco 24 August 2004

Nick as he put it himself was "blootered" due to having in-bided some of the amber nectar during the day/evening and so we had a very entertaining time with various ramblings, discussions about what we wanted him to play next etc plus obligatory string break/replacement.

HARPER'S BIZARRE - Jun 29 2004

Cockers

Thanks to Bob's Rucksack, I've just received a copy of The Birmingham Post
from Tuesday 29 June, which features an article about Roy (in the Culture
Section, fantastic).

Thanks Bob.

It really is an amusing and interesting article, when I get a moment to
spare in my leisurely day, I'll transcribe and post it. I've tried an OCR
scan and ended up with garbage, hey ho, so much for technology. If I'd got
some dosh, I'd get the whole page scanned at the local printing shop, but I
ain't, so regrettably I won't. The article's page has a reproduction of the
pic from the front of 'The Passions of Great Fortune', which must have got
the grannies of Birmingham twittering 8-).

Roy Harper - 300 words

The poet I listen to most, is Roy Harper. He intermingles his poems amongst the songs during his gigs and so they are on a number of his albums. My other favourite is Spike Milligan as it's such a hoot to read them to my kids.

Here is one of Roy's poems 300 words

Roy Harper -BBC Biog

Although he later castigated the outlet, they allowed him considerable artistic licence on this excellent album, considered by Harper as his first "real work", offered contrasting material, including the uncompromising "I Hate The White Man" and "Tom Tiddler's Ground", as well as the jocular "Hell's Angels", which featured support from the Nice.

...Stormcock, arguably the performer's finest work, consists of four lengthy, memorable songs which feature sterling contributions from arranger David Bedford and guitarist Jimmy Page. The latter remained a close associate, acknowledged on "Hats Off To (Roy) Harper" from Led Zeppelin III, and he appeared on several succeeding releases, including Lifemask and Valentine. Although marred by self-indulgence, the former was another remarkable set, while the latter reaffirmed Harper's talent with shorter compositions.... The singer's next release, Bullinamingvase, centred on the ambitious "One Of Those Days In England", but it is also recalled for the controversy surrounding the flippant "Watford Gap" and its less-than-complimentary remarks about food offered at the subject's local service station.

...Harper's subsequent work, while notable, lacked the passion of this period and The Unknown Soldier, a bleak and rather depressing set, was the prelude to a series of less compulsive recordings, although his 1990 album, Once, was critically acclaimed as a return to form.

...Songs such as "Forever", "I Hate The White Man", "Another Day", "Too Many Movies", "Home" and the glorious "Highway Blues" have all stood the test of time. Roy Harper remains a challenging, eccentric songwriter who has steadfastly refused to compromise his art. Commercial success has thus eluded him, but he retains the respect of many peers and a committed following.
