Great Glen Run #2

Dear All,

Just to let you know the current outline plan as confirmede by Aberdeen. We will be following this plan. In it are accomodation locations, rough distances and the highlight of each day - the pub instructions! Get the money to me ASAP please - I pay for accomodation this weekend.

Day 1

Inverness to Urquart castle 21m ( It's such a cool place to end the run )Unfortunately the pub is back 2 miles to Drumnadrocht. We could organise a beer stop on the bus at the end as anyone who stops there is unlikely to make the castle! The view is worth it and there is tea Toilets etc already there.

We then bus to the Hostel at Altsigh 10 miles further along, With 2 buses this should mean we can set up a ferry service. There is a pub at Invermorriston about 4 miles from the Hostel so we can go there in the evening. I suggest we make a food booking there for say 7.30. Aim to be back in the hostel at 9.30 to 10.00

Day 2

Back on bus to 1 mile before Urquart where trial leads inland for high level route (avoids A82 traffic)
Urquart to Lagon the Hostel this unfortunately is about 30 miles. There will be a bus 5 miles back for those that want to stop at 25 but there is no road on the route the last 5 miles. Nearest pub to the Hostel looks like 6-7 miles at Invagarry. Again hope to arrange the food booking 7.30. Aim to be back in the hostel at 9.30 to 10.00.

Day 3

Start off at Hostel unless anyone who short cuts wants to go back on the bus and then run past the Hostel. There may be some!

Lagon to Fort William about 24 miles. 4 miles before the end at Fort William is Neptune's staircase I recall there is a good pub there, it may be a good place for everyone to stop by as next stop is the official end. I do not remember any good places to meet at the official end it is a big car park. So it may be an exercise for those who only want to get the badge for the full distance. The bus can meet those who go the distance.

We are booked in at the Glen Nevis and there is an excellent pub about a mile down from the hostel across the river, or on the adjoining campsite? so even the drivers can drink on the last night. Plenty of places for circles, down downs or even dunking.

Day 4

For those with some go the Ben beckons, the plan is to get hippo to set off early and lay a trial for those who feel like it and the others can then just either summit via the stairs or hang round down below. Suggest one bus will be available for those that want to get to town. Plan to have a final circle at the foot of Nevis say 3pm at the visitor centre car park. Just down from that excellent little pub. How about bringing a couple of camping barbeques if we have space on the buses. We can get the meat etc Fort William on the Monday.

In terms of food breakfast etc, I think the best thing is to split us into 3 groups with 8- 10 a head. That way over 3 mornings everyone helps make the breakfast, lunch packs etc. If you are planning on 2 buses that means the provisions can be split between buses. It also allows different start times. I think we should always aim to be on the move by 9.00 or the day will be lost.
