Route Sheets - Lighting

Head torches are OK, but I would like a permanent light shining on the
routesheet.

AUK photos

There is a trend towards people establishing their own photo albums
online - I can link to these from the AUK 'photo gallery' if you like,
provided I have just one of the pictures to put up as a placeholder
then it will be listed in date order as usual, and the caption can include the
link to your photo album.

Harry Hill - Olympian

Cycling's grand old man makes it to the palace
By Ian Chadband, Evening Standard
23 March 2005

When Harry Hill meets the Queen tonight, surrounded by a nation's greatest athletes all gathered for a unique reception at Buckingham Palace, perhaps this grand old man may reflect that this is the Olympic homecoming he should have savoured nearly 70 years ago.

Passport of the Routes

On 15 Jan, 2005, at 21:55, findlay w wrote:

The following notes have been transcribed (with a few alterations) from the
late Andrew Manwell's "Passport of the Routes". At present, these routes
are simply circuitous rides. They are not linked in any way to AUK. If
there is enough interest, I would like to resurect them as Permanents, but
it is felt by some that under the current (stricter) guidelines for
Permanents, some may not be manageable in their current state.

There are no specific distances noted for the circuits, so if anyone with
Autoroute (or similar) is daft enough (sorry keen enough) to work them out,
I would be both interested and grateful.

Note that in ride 4 (Glendaruel and Tighnabruach), reference is made to
Ardgarten YH. I believe this establishment has now closed.

Anyway, if you are in that area, have a go. Personally, I have only ridden
the Loch Tay circuit (in November; mostly in the rain and the dark).
However, some of the routes described form part of routes of other main
calendar events which are, or have been run recently.

Good luck and enjoy!

PBP - DVD Damon Peacock

Damon Peacock produced a DVD video which many people have praised. I saw many of the clips which went into it, and I am sure it is streets ahead of the official ACP video, but as I have seen neither finished product I cannot really give an informed opinion.

...I did originally set out to question the reasons why people would undertake such a ride, but I know that I don’t ever ask myself why I do these things. I just started doing long rides and they sort of got out of hand.

"I started this style of filming on the Edinburgh London in 2001 and this too has got out of hand. I have never really intended the disc for a wide distribution, as it only really has appeal for those interested in long distance cycling. The music on the disc is copyrighted and if anyone wants to have a version with non-copyright music for public performance then I can oblige."

Directions - Paris to St Quentin

up the Champs Elysée to Place d'Etoile and WALK round it to
roughly 10 o,clock (with the Ch Elysée at 6.00) and head down the Avenue de la
Grande Armée.

At the bottom is Porte Dauphin which is the end of Paris proper
and you go straight across into the Bois de Boulogne and find the route to
Suresnes (signposted). Now it's easy -

Campsite St Quentin

For me, the campsite is good - I take my worst tent and my cheap-o sleeping bag, nothing worth stealing, and it has so far been OK. There have been a selection of Auks. It is Le Parc Etang de Saint Quentin en Yvelines, phone 30585620.
