Tyre Levers

AY> Never mastered the art. Am almost defeated by the lengthy battle to get the
AY> tyre off the rim, let alone back on again. Have never done it in less than
AY> half an hour (which can easily be the difference between making it on time
AY> to the next control or not).

AY> It's a helpless female speaking here, of course - some stereotypes have just
AY> a grain of truth in them :-)

Many moons ago, the womenfolk of western Sheffield used to meet
midweek in order to ride out into the Peak District en masse - the
reason being that it took 2 or 3 of us to get a tyre on and off the
rim, should a puncture occur -

Then we discovered Var tyre levers - a standard plastic lever plus a
lever which looks like a flattened, hooked tuning fork - I've carried
one ever since and never bothered about cycling alone - sometimes a
tyre is awkward but not yet found one which is impossible -

Dodgy Knees

Rod said:
I work on the basis that if they get a bit sore, they need some more
exercise. And a bit of Glucosamine with Chondroitin.
I have iffy knees too. Is Glucosamine any good? I thought it had to
be
taken over a long period for any advantage (but I don't really know).
Also
what is Chondroitin?

Auto Route Settings

The "offical" advice to organisers says set the Route/More Options/Driving Speeds to 8kph for motorways and limited access roads, and 20kph for all other routes.

Mersey 24hr

I have sent in an entry for this event, which I aim to do
without any help. Can anyone offer any hints, please? I have
read the '24 hour Manual' of the 24 Hour Fellowship, but most
of this seems to assumes a band of helpers. Is it possible to
do an Audax style run?

Jumping - Doubles

I can't do them either: if a jump's not rollable I just get offand
walk. But I've always thought a tabletop would make a safe practice
jump for doubles. Think of a double with the gap filled in, so that
if you land where the second up slope would have been it's not so
brutal. There's a solitary one somewhere around Hit Squad Hill on the
red route at GT, but there must be more somewhere. Anyone?
If I'm talking b*ll*cks, someone please correct me!
-Les.

Forth Road bridge and A90

So what I do is when I am travelling from Fife I take the turn off to North Queensferry and turn off into the new hotel go through their car park and join the bridge cycle path on the west side of the bridge, when I get to the Edinburgh side I drop down the slip road that takes you under the bridge and come back up and rejoin the A90 next to the Bridge Control building.

...As for routes too Dunfie I usually go through Rosyth but on summer evenings I go along the coast road (past the sewer-works and oil storage tanks) and at the big roundabout in Rosyth take the turning to go past the barracks which brings you out onto the road for Kincardine, turn left and after the Limekilns junction turn right to Dunfie at the top of the hill (I wouldn't do this at night time though cos the traffic goes pretty fast down this road) this brings you out at the bottom of the Glen and you can then cycle through the Glen (there is a bike lane) and it brings you out at the top of the town.

Tyres

During the Winter I switched from my old favourite Hutchinson Excel's to
Continental Gatorskins, using them for both commuting and weekend riding.
I have had a couple of p******es on the Gatorskins, both from
very narrow
thorns which seemed to work their way in slowly and only caused
slow deflations.
More worryingly, I have had the sidewalls cut through twice, by glass and
flint. I managed to limp home last night with the tyre soft as
I couldn't
inflate the tyre hard enough without the tube popping through the side.
This has left a 3 week old tyre unusable, which I think is disappointing
compared to the wear time that I used to get from the hutchinsons.
Has anyone else experienced this problem ?
