Camping at Sinkyone

laura, francis, and i go camping for the 4th of july weekend.

Laura and i have been trying to get ourselves camping for a few months. I wanted to go to the Ohlone wilderness which is south of Livermore. i had a really hard time finding info. i went to the east bay parks head quarters and got a map/permit. i couldn't tell how we were supposed to go about making reservations or what we would need to bring. luckily laura has a useful twin brother. we put him in charge of finding a place to camp. he did a good job and picked a place about 200 miles north of us called Sinkyone Wilderness.

Laura and i drove up to Fran's house in Forestville on thursday night. Fran wanted us to get up early on friday but laura and i had different plans. I think we left around 11. It took us 4 hours to get there. about 3 hours on 101 and an hour on a small country road/dirt road into the park. the dirt road down into the park was spectacular. it must have gone from around 1100 feet down to sea level with an ocean of fog visible through the trees way down at sea level.

we picked a spot about .3 miles from our car. the camp host said it would be a windy but it really wasn't. our site was up on a bluff over looking the ocean on one side and the forested hills on the other. it was very beautiful and there weren't any other camp sites near by.

it was just about dinner time we had our tents up. we ate cheese tortellini. after dinner we went on a short walk down to a beach.

On Saturday we got up mid-morning, fran and i made pancakes. laura had her's with maple syrup, fran had his with cherries, and i had mine with chocolate chips. i also flew my kite.

then we made way too much trail mix from all the stuff dried fruit and stuff fran bought, and went on a hike.

there are Roosevelt elk at the park. and we saw this group at the very beginning of our walk. there is only one trail in the park. it is the lost coast trail and it runs the entire length of the park north to south. we walked for 4.5 miles from the end of the dirt road south to a camp site/beach called wheeler. it was a pretty tuff hike with lots of up and down. the trail runs along the cliffs and ridges at the cost.

we were really pooped by the time we got back to our camp. we had rice and beans for dinner and went to bed pretty early.

we were still tired from our walk on Saturday to do another long walk plus we had to drive home. we went on a mile and a half walk north of our camp. it was really pirtty. and we saw two elk with big antlers.

On our way back we got in the same traffic game outside of Willits that laura and i did last year. we had dinner with fran and Betsy before Laura and i headed home.
It was a really nice trip.
