Okay so Saturday I start my Woodturning Class at Cerritos College!

It's exciting to learn new things! Segmented Bowls making is what I'll be learning this time. So what is a segmented bowl? Look at this site:

Although this week I have been searching the web for info on segmented bowls and all of a sudden I discover this could involve a lot of math! Oh my gosh! I think I'm in trouble! Well, I have the best teacher on the subject. I'll try to video the process and if I survive the math I'll even post my masterpieces, he he!

Just turned a bowl I turned in my Wood Turning Class!

What a thrill it is to use wood that would have ended up in a dump somewhere and turn it into a piece of art. Let me share with you the excitment of creating things out of wood. The pleasure can be found at a local community college and in my case one Sunday afternoon a week. I love learning but this is so much fun! And what's wrong with having fun in your life. I always said do like the book, "Do What You Love and the Money Will Follow". So I don't see the money yet, but I do love it anyway! And everything is not about money!

So did you know that turning wood is easy! A lathe is used to spin the wood around and a group of gouges, 7 to 10, are used to cut into the wood making shapes like spindles and bowls and cups and on and on. Type in wood turning in your search engine and see all the examples around the world. Beautiful pieces all inlayed and cut in ways I can't figure out yet! I'll try and put up pictures of my masterpieces (intro to wood turning class masterpieces) tomorrow. Look back in this message in a few days.

My problem is I love working with wood and ceramics! Ahhh What a wonderful problem!

All Day in Woodworking Class!

Friday was the longest day! I spent from 10:30am to 10:30 pm in the Wood Shop at school yesterday finishing my toolbox final assignment! Oh, argh, yikes, my back hurts. This kinda feels like hard labor! But I made the best box joints and mortise and tendon joints ever! Life is good! You have no idea what goes into making those little wood thingys we take for granted. My toolbox is made out of Curly Maple wood and Cherry Wood. It's fun (I think)! I'll have some pictures of it so far later today! Having a Garage Sale now!

This is a Push Stick! I made it in my Intro to Wood Class

So what is a push stick? You don't know? Push READ ME at the Bottom and find out!

Isn't it pretty? A Push Stick is used to push a piece of wood across the table saw, which in turn keeps your fingers from touching the blade. Which is not a good thing! This push stick is made out of Honduras Mahogany and sanded a lot. It was coated with Antique Minwax. This is my first wood project! Not too bad for an old lady. What do you think?

Pictures from my Intro to Wood Class

Wait till you see my final project I'm making out of wood! It's a tool box deluxe! Here's some photos of the classroom and me sanded something. Oh, and one of me pretending to chisel my mallet handle. Duh!

Courtney is my deskmate and a very sweet gal. She helps me when I started acting like an old lady! Thank you sweetie! Tony is the instructor's aid and really knows his stuff. He's is so cool! Thanks Tony for all your guidance!

Right after this picture I caught a piece of ebony I was sanding in this machine and scared the hell out of me! I lost the piece up that hose thingy in the back. I could have sanded my fingers. The noise was loud and my teacher came running. I was working on a piece that was too small. I was busted! But ok!
