![]() No READ MORE Posted at 06:48 PM Fri - January 16, 2004Started a Life Sculpture and Handbuilding Class This WeekWhat a blast! The class I'm taking at Cerritos
College, Life Sculpture, teaches modeling clay from a Live Model. Our first
young man is a little over weight and has long black hair. We sit at a table
with wheels and all move around the model every half hour or
so.
READ MORE........ We use Red Earthenware clay and first find the planes of the model. Now all I see are features of people, in the store, on TV, in Magazines. Your leg is longer than your arm and your back is curved like a C. Red Clay is really messy and makes your hands red. It feels great to create and it's amazing that 3D is still fascinating to me. This is going to be quite an adventure. Also I am taking a Handbuilding class in ceramics and we are exploring textures and colored clay. Posted at 10:43 AM Thu - December 11, 2003Just Finished a Report on Artist Beatrice WoodThis amazing woman lived to be 104 years old.
(1894 - 1998). What a interesting life she had. I will post the report tomorrow.
In the meantime, take a look by searching, Beatrice
Wood.

over and we sat out back all day and worked on creating some ceramic projects.
How fun it was to sit and chat with a friend while your hands are working to
create something. I think it must of felt like the quilters feel when they sit
around quilting and chatting about life. Some tea, a little salmon for lunch and
lots of laughter. I'm so lucky to have such a good
friend!
No READ MORE Posted at 01:11 AM Wed - December 3, 2003My Finished Ceramic Pieces! Not too bad for my first attempts. What do you
think? You know glazing is a mysterious art. When you put on the blue glaze, for
example, it's gray color. It's not like you paint it the color it turns out.
After firing it looks completely different. It's very weird and frustrating but
fun! Here also is some photo's of the me as I put on the glaze. I'll show you
the end results, next time when they take it out of the oven. Different methods
were used. The big pots were coil built. Others were built by slab, pinched and
poked, stepped on and kicked. Just kidding on the last
three!

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Here's an attempt at a short little video. What am I, the teacher? Stop that! You need quicktime and a speaker to hear me. I'll show you the after glaze look of this when it's done. The tree will be very dark, the gray part will be blue & white and the top and bottom will be a green color. I hope! No one ever knows. The glaze reacts with the clay and other glazes and turn out different than you expect. Look for it next week. Posted at 12:24 PM Tue - December 2, 2003Finishing Up in Ceramics ClassGetting down to the deadline in both my Intro
to Ceramics and Intro to Wood classes. I have created pots, cups, bowls, a cool
little house and a very weird personal statement about popular culture. Some of
the masterpieces (hehe) should be out of the oven today. I'll have some pictures
up soon. What fun it was to work with the earth! And then of course there's the
dreaded final and the museum report. I have already been to 3 museums but I hear
they have a great Mexican Pottery Exhibit at the Gene Autrey museum in Los
Angeles. Sooo, I'm going there this week. I'll take pictures of that whole
day!
Look for pictures soon. . . .

And they all work! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This is the inside of my "Pot to Piss In" for my Fatal Error series. No one should be without a pot to piss in! Portigal thank you! You have inspired me!
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Posted at 03:41 AM Sat - October 25, 2003My first ceramic masterpieces!This is a pitcher I made. Notice the drop coming
off the tip of the lip of the pitcher. It happened has the glaze was being fired
in the kiln. Couldn't have done that if I tried! The glaze is Rutile Pink with
drops of DimeStore glaze and a touch of Colbalt wash on the sides. It's amazing
to me how it all works. I'm really having fun in my class. Next week wheel
turning!
This was a great learning
experience!
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Posted at 01:39 AM Ceramic CupsSomething very fulfilling when you drink coffee
or tea out of a cup you created yourself. To connect to the earth and create
something runs deep in our DNA. Clay was used to create things 27,000 thousand
years ago.
Here's where I give credit to my instructor for
opening my eyes to the techniques of creating
ceramics.
Thanks, Mr. Steve Portigal for your enthusiasm and guidance in the Cerritos College Class Intro to Ceramics. I have learned so much in the last month. It's amazing to me how ceramic pots and other pieces look so much different than before! What a great ceramics department you have created. Next week we start throwing clay on the wheel. I think it's going to be painful. I hear it uses muscles you didn't know you had. Also, it's really messy from what I see with the other students. Okay I'll stop pre- whining now. Here's my cups: ![]() ![]() ![]() I still can't believe that the handle stays on the cup. This I custom made to my fingers and was the first handmade cup (by me) that I drink out of. The English tea tasted much better! Posted at 12:10 AM Fri - October 24, 2003 |
