The Candlelight Reading Series

With FairfieldPerforms, Freddy Niagara Fonseca, founder, celebrates the poetic impulses at the heart of each and all of the performing arts, combining them with performance poetry in inventive, uplifting ways.

One of its branches, the Candlelight Reading Series had its kickoff performance on December 21, 2004 at 8 PM when Freddy shared An Evening of Night Poems with Fairfield audiences at Revelations bookstore. At this candlelit event, he recited selections of American poetry on the theme of night.

On January 15, 2005, 8 PM, Ken Chawkin, Rolf Erickson and Freddy were featured in a Haiku and Nature Poetry event. Tim Britton accompanied them on various musical instruments. A reading of love poetry in February took place on Valentine's Day with Tracy Chipman, story teller, Jennifer Howland, and Freddy.

Songs, Poems and Stories of the Sea, a program with five guitarists/songwriters, Tracy Chipman, story teller, and Freddy reciting poems related to the ocean was presented on March 12th. A few days later, An Evening of Irish Poetry with Jennie Lee and Freddy accompanied by Tim Britton on flute had its performance at Café Paradiso. In April, Nynke Doetjes and Freddy gave a much appreciated Emily Dickinson & Walt Whitman reading.

A show of Shakespearean Sonnets and Scenes from Romeo and Juliet with Elizabethan Music and Dance was performed three times in March and April at the Iowa Conservatory Theatre in Fairfield.

On April 30th, A Celebration of Great Women Poets brought six ladies and Freddy together reciting poems exclusively by women poets.

A Spanish poetry reading with translations took place on June 4th in front of a capacity audience. Jannou Jaxtheimer read the poems in Spanish and Freddy the translations.

An outdoor event with several poets, Summer Poems in Central Park, is coming up on July 7th followed by an evening of mystical poetry from many cultures on July 15th to be performed by Freddy and guest Sharalyn Harris.

At the request of someone in the audience at the Dickinson/Whitman reading back in April, Freddy has decided to present some of Walt Whitmans longer poems in the series. Date: August 27, 2005 at Revelations.

Classical poetry of Blake, Keats, Shelley, and Byron presented by Freddy and Tracy Chipman is tentatively scheduled in the fall of 2005, as well as Sonnets to Listen To, a program entirely consisting of sonnets with Freddy and actress Thelma Jones.

For January 2006, a program of highlights of the 2005 readings is planned.

A program of Greek drama and verse is being considered for performance possibly in 2006, as well as the Ramayana with Michael Sternfeld along with Indian poetry by Tagore, Mirabai and Kabir recited by Freddy.

A mime group would be a welcome addition to the Fairfield urban and cultural scene. PoetryPerforms is welcoming suggestions.

Plans for a Chamber Music Series in Fairfield are in progress. The idea is to have monthly chamber music concerts at suitable locations. Classical musicians are invited to contact Freddy to be added to the roster.

During the summer months, outdoor group readings are planned in Central Park, featuring various poets reading from their own works as well as selections from other poets. Poetry slams are being considered as well. In a not too distant future, we are looking to have a big, yearly poetry festival in the summer time in Fairfield.
