Tony Dron shrugged off a stiff practice challenge from the latest Ford Capri 3, and the worry of a Goodyear revival in Gp1 Touring Car racing, to give Leyland Cars and Dunlop a resounding victory at Silverstone. Dron's Dunlop-shod, Triumph Dolomite Sprint - a brand new car built by Ralph Broad - was on pole position for the opening round of the Tricentrol/RAC British Saloon Car Championship after Saturday practice and, in the race, which was reduced from 20 to 15 laps because of atrocious wet weather conditions and a delayed programme; Dron simply pulverised the opposition. The red, white and blue Dolomite disappeared into the clouds of spray and was never seen again, except by those being lapped. Those that hadn't been lapped, and there weren't many, slithered about hopelessly in Dron's wake, most of them taking time out for at least a couple of spins on the streaming track. In spite of flu that laid him low before the race, Dron won by 22s. |
