The first round of the 1978 ETCC promised to be even duller than your average 1977 race; Jaguar and Alpina had pulled the plug, so a handful of privateers remained, spiced with local entrants which in the worst case (like here) did not have a national Group 2 championship and therefore could offer little else than some Group 1B machinery.
Of the 4 BMW’s entered, two did not even start since their complete engine stock was used in practice. The other two were a Luigi car, entered by BMW Italia for Walkinshaw/Grano, and last years’ Alpina car, sold to Finotto who shared with Facetti. The latter was the quickest car, but hopeless pit stops saw the Luigi car closer and closer, and in the final stint Walkinshaw took over the lead just three laps before the end.
The 1600 cc class was the most interesting, with Scirocco’s fighting for the class lead. Bergmeister/Siegrist had a broken half shaft, which was changed in a staggering 5 minutes, but it was not enough: Lloyd/Stocker had passed and won the class.
