The classic event on the Zandvoort track saw a cold and wet practice, in which the Jaguars did not shine: third and fifth on the grid, and while the Alpina crew concentrated on timing the Jaguars, Finotto/Facetti in the Luigi cat stole pole position...
Absent was the works Audi, a “development pause”, but an unlucky Audi win could easily hamper Volkswagen’s championship lead as well...
After the start, Hezemans (Alpina) and Rouse (Jaguar) had a nice battle which had been missing from the ETCC for so long. But after ten laps, the Jaguars’ rear tires overheated and its pace slipped. The other Jaguar, with a dry-sump system for the first time - which lasted for 8 minutes, then the pump failed. In 52 minutes time, a heavier type was fixed; an improvement, it held for 39 minutes. The next one took 56 minutes and lasted only 9 minutes, the last one took only 40 minutes to fix - then the car retired anyway. The other Jag first had a puncture and retired later with a broken differential.
The Alpina car was in the lead, of course, and the Italian Luigi car followed but no more than that - until it retired. The race now was boring as ever, with the Alpina car three laps in front of the second Luigi car; the other classes were decided by retirements rather than fights as well.
