The Zandvoort Trophy, was together with the Nürburgring the race with the longest ETCC history; both venues were part of the calendar since 1963. For Zandvoort, the tradition would soon be broken; FIA took away the 1976 race since the 1975 race had GT's in the field. That was done in some other races as well; but Zandvoort was punished. The 1975 edition proved to be an interesting one, though. The Schnitzer cars did not turn up, but apart from the three Faltz entries, with Stommelen returning to action after his Jarama F1 accident, some top-line Porsche Carrera RSR's were entered. One Gelo car with Hezemans/Schenken, two Kremer cars with Wollek/van Lennep and Siewertsen/Barth, and two Tebernum cars for Schickentanz/Bertrams and local FF1600 heroes de Giaxa de Salvi/van Kempen. Dutch championship regulars Vermeulen and Kluit entered their cars too; Huub Vermeulen teamed up with Fred Frankenhout (originally Wim Boshuis should have partnered him, but alas), Kluit was assisted by Ernst Berg and F5000 racer Boy Hayje, who was supposed to race with his mentor Hezemans in the Carrera first. But Loos wanted more experience and he chose Schenken. Kluit's 1973 ex-works Capri sported the 1974 RS 3100 aero package - strange for a RS 2600. More locals: Coorengel and Fresco hired a Capri from Odenthal (Maus 4, probably a 1973 ex-works car) and Lammers shared Herrmann’s 16 valve BMW 2002. Division 1 brought another surprise; the black Ford Escort II was brought to Zandvoort. It went round in 1.36,5 - a contender for the front row, it seemed. Then, while passing Stommelen (!) at bos uit, the fast right-hander leading to the straight, the cars touched, Heyer lost it and had an enormous off. The beautiful car was a write-off. He was switched to the 13" car of Finotto/de Madrid. When the flag dropped, the Faltz #21 car took the lead, followed by an epic battle between Hezemans and van Lennep. Lap 9 saw the end of the second Tebernum car, later Siewertsen had to quit with gearbox troubles and Vermeulen lost a front wheel. Jan Lammers, racing a German BMW, had to give up with gearbox problems. The lead car became a frequent pit visitor with rear axle troubles, but things got worse for the second and third Faltz cars: both went out at the exit of Tarzan, the Melitta car on top of the guard rail, the other one neatly parked at the opposite side with a blown engine. |
