Current champion Stuart Graham was trying the 7.4-litre engine again this time and to good effect, for the Faberge Camaro gained pole. Richard Lloyd made the best start and led into Club first time around inches ahead of Graham, then a slight gap to Vince Woodman, Tony Shaw and Andy Rouse and then a stream of cars comprising Gordon Spice, John Hine, Barrie Williams, Brian Pepper, Tom Walkinshaw, John Handley, Peter Hanson, Gillian Fortescue-Thomas and Jon Fletcher. Graham passed Lloyd on the inside of Church on lap 2, the Think Automotive car losing ground as Lloyd locked a front brake at Club as he tried to repass. Graham started to pull away but Lloyd's determination stopped the gap from becoming too large and indeed the gap started to shrink so that the two Camaros were nose-to-tail by half distance. Lloyd retook the lead on lap 12 and four laps later the Faberge Camaro was 4.5s in arrears. However, Lloyd, typically honest, said that his concentration lapsed and a sigh went up from the Club grandstand as he slowed to a halt, sideways; Graham passed and pulled out a 5s gap which he maintained till the end in front of the unfortunate Lloyd.

Vince Woodman drove an excellent race in the Team Esso Camaro, his being the first 5.7 home, to finish third with the aid of a power-steering pump borrowed from Graham. Tony Shaw, perplexed by the handling of the National Organs Camaro, let Andy Rouse's harrying Dolomite Sprint by, the Piranha car having been cured of its practice overdrive problems.

Gordon Spice also broke away from the group dicing in midfield, his class win being made easier as the Opel Commodores fell by the wayside.

Win Percy had an easy win in the smallest class and to amuse himself he chased the larger-engined cars of Holman Blackburn (Hermetite Capri) and Allan Wilkinson (RS2000 Escort) throughout the race.
