With a start-to-finish victory in the touring car race that preceded the Grand Prix, Stuart Graham extended his lead in the unlimited class of the Southern Organs Gp1 Championship, but Andy Rouse again won his class to maintain his single point advantage over Graham in the overall order.

At the start of the 20-lap race, Richard Lloyd's Simoniz Camaro hotly challenged Graham's Faberge Chevrolet. Lloyd's engine gradually lost its edge, however, and finally gave up on the last lap. With Graham, Rouse and Win Percy among the class winners, the result was a paragon of predictability, the only slight surprise being that John Handley's Opel Commodore stole the 4-litre honours.
