Race 1
Barrie Williams put an oriental cat among the British Leyland pigeons in practice for this Southern Organs Gp1 round, inserting his Mazda into pole for the smaller two classes' race with a time identical to Andy Rouse's. Yet all hopes of a good race evaporated at the start when Whizzo's Mazda dwelt on the blocks and was almost last into Copse. That allowed Rouse and his Piranha/Broadspeed Dolomite team-mate Roger Bell to circulate at the head of the field more or less as they liked a few lengths apart. Indeed, that was the way they finished, Bell closing near the end but not trying to pass Rouse. Wilkinson hung on well for third place until Williams, recovering in spectacular style from his disappointment, came up to pass him on lap 11. Two tours later Wilkinson's Escort skated to a halt at Woodcote and retired with no oil pressure; almost immediately afterwards, Williams dropped out, stuck in second gear. So John Hine and Gillian Fortescue-Thomas inherited third and fourth places in Bill Shaw's cars for a Dolomite clean sweep.
Although beaten in practice, Win Percy kept well in front of Unett to win the 1600 cc class, the minor class placings here going to Jenny Birrell's Avenger and Rex Greenslade's Celica.

Richard Lloyd pipped Stuart Graham for pole by 0.4s in the Southern Organs event for the two larger Gp1 classes. Lloyd got the power down well and led into Copse, but Graham's getaway was not so good and for a few hundred yards he was confronted by the boot of Vince Woodman's Camaro. Once past he quickly reeled Lloyd in, taking the lead from the Simoniz car at Maggots on lap two. Lloyd hung onto Graham's tail, making for a good race, but on lap six Lloyd pitted when his alternator warning light switched on. He rejoined, but by now was nearly last, apparently out of it.
Graham was 10 seconds clear of Woodman, and these two continued in solitary splendour towards the flag, unchallenged. Tony Shaw's Camaro inherited third, followed by Malcolm West's similar car - Tony Lanfranchi's Hemicuda had been effectively eliminated when Nigel Stovin-Bradford bumped into him at Woodcote on lap two. Then Shaw's Camaro pulled off with a puncture, and Lloyd, recovering magnificently, reeled in Jon Fletcher, whose Camaro retired soon afterwards with a leaking radiator. On lap 20 Lloyd caught and passed West to be third - and then, long after Graham had taken the flag but half a lap clear of Lloyd, Woodman threw away a certain second by trying to lap five cars at once at the last corner. He slid to a halt on the grass, handing Lloyd a deserved second after his fighting recovery and the APG Driver of the Day Award. West was third, Woodman classified fourth. The only persistent dice of the race was a very entertaining duel for the 4-litre honours between John Handley's new Opel Commodore and Stuart Rolt's Capri. Handley narrowly defeated Rolt, who had probably his best ever race, but it was close.
