The third race of the ailing championship brought bad news in respect of sponsorship; Memphis, which sponsored Schnitzer with an eleven-round championship in mind, was not prepared to pay the same sum for a 6-round championship. Schnitzer had a different view though, but despite these quarrels one Schnitzer car was entered here, the other one busy in the German DRM Championship, like the Zakspeed Escorts (likewise), but the Italian Escort was missing as well. Since the distance was shortened from 4 hours to 500 kms, points were only awarded for drivers which covered 90% of the distance. The result was an extremely poor entry, with only two competitive cars, the Schnitzer BMW and the Faltz car of Peltier. The organisers attempted to improve matters by shortening the distance to 500 km; and by allowing GT cars into the race, at least some competition would be there. Ford's decision not to pressure Zakspeed for an entry here was based on the fact that probably only a handful Division 1 cars would be here (so no points); to the horror of Ford, enough Austrian hopefuls turned up so BMW could get an easy 20 points - for both divisions. After the start, Zondler took the lead and never looked back; the weak Alpina opposition was good for second place only. That completed the points scorers, too - the reduced distance caused the minimum distance to be covered 108 laps... |
