This was a crucial race in the Southern Organs series, with Stuart Graham, Andy Rouse and Win Percy starting as joint leaders and all needing a win to improve their points scores.
Not surprisingly, Graham's Camaro was on pole but it was interesting that the Nantwich driver was finding the car no quicker with its 7-litre engine round Oulton than it had been with its 5.7-litre.

Woodman made the best start and led for a lap, but Graham powered past him as they passed the pits at the end of the first lap and that looked like the end of things. But just after half-distance a half-shaft let go on the Faberge Camaro and a very sick Stuart Graham was out of the race. Woodman had meanwhile left Richard Lloyd behind as Lloyd struggled with his beast completely unassisted after its power steering belt broke on the second lap.

So it was Woodman's VMW/Esso Camaro which went on to win the race comfortably from Brian Muir, whose Dolomite Sprint just fended off a very strong challenge from Andy Rouse's Dolomite and so won its class. Pepper came in fourth and four-litre class winner Chris Craft inherited fifth overall with his Wisharts Capri after Lloyd lost control of his Camaro going through Fosters with three laps left and slid into the sleepers.

The little class was full of dramas. In the first corner traffic jam Percy ran into the back of Stuart Rolt's Capri and stopped at the end of the lap to have the damage checked. He was soon out again and catching up at a phenomenal rate. By lap nine he was with his team mate Brian Cutting in the other Samurai car and had class leader Stan Clark's Alfa in sight - and then a brake pipe broke and he, like fellow championship leader Graham, was out of the race. So Clark took the class, finishing well clear of Cutting, who was suffering from a rather severe lack of brakes.
