The 1975 Nürburgring 4-hours race, shortened from the traditional 6-hour format, presented a decent entry - for 1975 standards. Unfortunately, no competitive Capri here; and both the remaining works car and the private cars of Schommers and Odenthal did not enter. The remaining 15 top-level cars were reduced to 13 after practice. Heyer had an accident with a back marker in the last session; a total-loss of the fastest Zakspeed Mk1 Escort on 15" wheels. The teams had to be reformed, leaving Colzani and Denzel without a drive. The second Schnitzer car was written off by Zondler. Final practice saw the Kelleners/Grohs ex-IMSA car in front. Fitzpatrick had to be content with second fastest. The race started with a fight between Fitzpatrick and Kelleners, which was ended by Fitzpatrick breaking the rear axle. In the following laps, the Brun, Rummel and Schurti cars retired. Heyer, favourite in division 1, became a very frequent visitor of the pits, complaining of fuel pump problems. They went on, just to find out what was wrong - the next DRM round had to be driven with this same car. Finally, Heyer managed eleven laps. The Finotto Escort first had oil loss problems, then the differential lost its oil too - out. An unchallenged 1-2-3 for Faltz therefore, a brave NSU driven by Bergmeister/Wolf was the surprising fourth, after a long battle with the equally well-driven Scirocco of Dahlhäuser/Wunsch. |
