The Monza paddock was not what it used to be in the past. Instead of teams fighting for space and endless difficulties at scrutineering, the teams had ample space and not a single quarrel with the Italian officials.
Reason was, of course, the sparse entries. Not a single Capri, and only 5 BMW coupés, of which three had the 24-valve engine. Two tired Camaros rounded off division 1.
Division two hardly looked any better. Many Alfa GTAm’s, not really changed since 1970, but they were outpaced by the Zakspeed Escort of Heyer/Finotto. A few other Escorts were entered, like the one of Mohr/de Leonibus, which had 15” wheels like the Zakspeed car. One private 16-valve BMW 2002 provided the competition.
Fastest man in the race was Brambilla, who drove one of the Schnitzer cars. But after a while, both Schnitzer cars started to develop a number of small problems, so the Faltz car of Peltier/Müller took over. In order to regain lost ground, Quester had to increase the tempo. The bill came in the form of an engine failure. After the pit stop of the second Schnitzer car, the next engine failure was only a few laps away.
This enabled the little Zakspeed Escort to climb to second place overall, in front of another Escort.
