Having extracted the engine from the car shunted at Brands and inserted it into the Tour of Britain winning Camaro, Richard Lloyd was fastest on Friday with a 1.43,7, almost three seconds better than anybody else. On Saturday, however, Stuart Graham's similar car bumped him off pole with 1.42,3 before a wobble out of Woodcote betrayed a broken half-shaft.
Lloyd kept the middle of the front row by improving to 1.42,9, but Peter Hanson got the Dealer Opel Team Commodore GSE going better than ever before to complete it in 1.47,1.

With a hint of creeping Lloyd was first off the line but Graham was rather slow off the mark and filed into Copse behind Woodman. When they came into sight again under the Daily Express bridge it was the two Camaros already well clear as expected, Lloyd leading Graham by a couple of lengths. Woodman was already nearly five seconds down with another long gap before Walkinshaw, Brindley, Blackburn, Hanson, Dron, Rouse, Lyon, Fletcher, Wayne and the rest filed past. On the second lap Graham challenged Lloyd approaching Woodcote but fell back in line for the corner. Hanson moved up to fifth to attack Walkinshaw while Rouse shot up to sixth place. Hanson relegated the leading Capri on lap three and swiftly drew away; from that moment the pattern for the major places was set.
Braking for Copse on lap five Graham slipped inside Lloyd to take the lead. Lloyd was back in front before Maggots, but by the end of the lap the black car of Graham was in command again with the white Camaro sitting a few feet from its boot and trying very hard to reverse the position. It was an impressive sight as the heavy machines drifted through Woodcote with their tails well out of line, weaving past the pits, although any prize for the most spectacular slides would have gone to Walkinshaw and Rouse, whose slip angles looked as though they might become obtuse at any moment.
But Lloyd was trying too hard. On the eighth lap he dropped back a second or so and then at Copse he lost it completely. After a quick spin he restarted still second, for Woodman was virtually half a minute behind, but he had given Graham a 15 second lead that he wasn't going to throw away. Way down the field Unett and Clark were enjoying a splendid ding-dong for 1600 honours, the dual engulfing Denis Thorne's Firenza by half way.
By lap 12 Graham's lead had grown to 20 seconds. In the last couple of laps he was seen to be slowing, but it was only a precautionary easing off to avoid unnecessary strain on tyres, brakes (which are a major problem for the Gp1 Camaro) or fuel. He had the race in his pocket and there were no holes in it, even though he took the flag less than seven seconds in front of Lloyd. Woodman was a very distant third, over half a minute adrift, and the Opel buttoned up its class very comfortably. Rouse and Dron made sure of their class, the fault with the overdrive having been discovered and rectified, but Hine failed to make it a Dolomite class one-two-three by just 0.2s to Lyons' Alfa.
Clark took the 1600 victory for Alfa Romeo by 0.6s from Unett, and Bell defeated Kirkby with Chittenden still sandwiched between them.
