Brian Muir earned a fine victory in the Group 2 race that preceded the F1 event, taking the lead as late as the 17th of the 20 laps when Frank Gardner made a mistake under pressure at Becketts and spun his big Camaro after totalling dominating the first half of the race. It was a win in the grand manner as Muir lashed the tail of his Gartlan BMW CSL all over the road in the chase during a snowstorm that left the circuit very slippery. Andy Rouse took the 2-litre class with ease after Dave Brodie had spun his similar Escort early in the race. Vince Woodman's Escort had no opposition to a runaway conquest of the 1300 class, cutting 1.8s off the lap record for good measure when the track dried put. Les Nash also set a new lap record in his ex-McGovern Imp, despite which he failed to beat Bill McGovern by the tiniest margin.
