The entry was much better than Monza. More Fiats with a better chance than the fast Monza track; some fast BMW 2002’s took part here; and in division 3, we had three Schnitzer coupés, including Peltier’s private car, another (brand new) one for Alpina and last but not least the lightweight but ballasted Broadspeed car, who had lost the works development deal for the future CSL but entered the race anyway. At least, it was thought that the car was ballasted. Or was it?
Only the first practice was dry, so it was difficult to get a picture of the situation. In division 1, Facetti was fastest but the first Fiat was in position 2. Division 3 saw the Capri’s in front, but the heavy BMW’s clocked encouraging times. Birrell’s 6th overall brought him in the middle of the Munich 3-liter brigade.

Sunday saw terrible weather. First victim was Dona, who did not have enough traction from the start line with his front wheel drive to prevent three Alfa’s to pass him. Facetti had a brilliant drive, lapping all other cars at least once. At the finish, four Alfas finished in front of two Fiats.

In the division 2 and 3 race, the Capris took the lead, followed by the Broadspeed car. Quester could not start his car in time, lost a lot of time and finally crashed into the barriers in the first hour. Pankl too had a bad start, but he and team-mate Ertl in the 2002 could pass Birrell in his light Escort, who had troubles driving straight, his wide tires aquaplaning. Peltier was left behind too, the young man being careful in this weather with his expensive car. Although Ertl fell victim of engine troubles and had to stop frequently to dry the ignition, he could keep his class lead to the finish.
Glemser came closer to Stuck in the end, who had been driving as a man possessed with the little view that was left in the heavy rain. Third still was Fitzpatrick, but Pankl closed in to fourth placed Heyer, whose vision was even further reduced by steamy windows. Although Pankl had the same trouble, he passed Heyer in the last possible moment and was 5/100 of a second in front at the finish line.
No need for team orders at Ford: oil starvation on the Stuck car left Stuck with no alternative as to creep to the finish, which he just reached, in second.
An entertaining race under terrible conditions.
