The attraction of Paul Ricard was money. Not only the amount of price money, but starting money for Big Names too. Like Stewart/Crevits in a Ford works car, with Elf sponsoring and Goodyear tires. Gerry Birrell was the sensation of Friday, driving the Frami works-built Capri, still on 13” wheels unlike the factory cars with its Firestone tires to 2.13,7, half a second faster than the works cars, while the BMW’s had difficulties with the set-up. Hezemans pushed Alpina to try Firestones too, and while Schnitzer did the same early on Saturday both improved on their times. Glemser finally managed to beat Birrell’s time, but no one else did. Then the rain came, allowing no further time improvements, while Akersloot, last-minute replacement for Quester who was not allowed to race by the doctor, could come to grips with the Alpina coupé. Ford Köln changed engines, ass well as the Malcolm Gartlan team, who installed at brand new experimental engine obtained from Weslake from the back door. Stommelen made a fantastic start and took the lead, followed by Stewart, Birrell, Muir, Hezemans, Glemser and Larrousse. The cars kept close together, reaching lap times of 2.15 on full tanks. The first one to break free was Muir, his engine seemingly very strong. The BMW’s dropped back, Stommelen himself making a lengthy repair of the fuel injection belt. After one hour, the Muir Capri was still in the lead, the works cars hardly capably to stay in the slipstream. Behind five Capri’s, Hezemans was still able to keep their pace. When the works cars came in for fuel, Hezemans stuck like a man possessed behind the leading Gartlan Capri, until the car had to be repaired in the pits. The other Alpina coupé did not make the start at all since its engine had broken during the warm-up. After three hours, Crevits was in the lead for a short spell, followed by Muir, Soler-Roig, Franck and the Broadspeed Escort of Matthews/Rouse. Division 1 was lead by the Autodelta team as usual, after the fastest car in practice (Dona/Grano, Fiat 128 coupé) had retired after 19 laps. The Ford works team waited until the Gartlan Capri had to come in for fuel to take over the lead, it had stopped one time less than them, so he would have to come in. Would he? No he did not, thanks to a modification in the Weslake engine, of which only a single version existed. Not enough for the works team, but sufficient for the Gartlan team. An exciting and unexpected victory for Muir and co-driver Miles. |
