The winner of this race would be Ford - since the homologation of the BMW 3.0 CSL failed, too few were built so BMW had to race the heavy 2800 CS instead. The investments of Munich in the direction of Broadspeed UK - they built a lightweight coupé - were useless, just like the already built lightweight Schnitzer car. Alpina did not bother to enter Monza altogether, so the only opposition for the Capris came from the Schnitzer cars, of which several examples found their way to Monza. Practice was dominated by Ford, Glemser fastest, Larrousse second but way back, just 0,1 second in front of Quester. The explanation for this was the fact that Larrousse had to use the spare car since Mass had a big off with the new car. Mass himself was at Le Mans Test weekend with yet another Capri. After the start, Mass disappeared into the distance and never looked back. He was followed by Quester, Peltier and Birrell. Glemser dropped back with ignition troubles. This was repaired, but after setting a new lap record the car retired one hour before the end. |
