Brno, firm entry in the ETCC once again, wasn’t changed at all. Still fast, still dangerous. Saturday practice for division 1 started wet. After 30 minutes, an accident occurred, which took the lives of a track marshal and Autodelta driver Luigi Rinaldi. Rinaldi spun in the fast right hander, caused by aquaplaning, and crashed into the building on the finish line. Unfortunately, when Larini had a big moment a little earlier on the same spot, it frightened a few officials, who moved to a safer spot - but not all. Six of them were left - five of them escaped by the door; the sixth one was killed. Division 2 and 3 took it a little easier, warned by the accident, but Mass damaged his suspension (this could be repaired in time for the second session) and Walter Brun destroyed one Schnitzer coupé. Brun, for the first time in Brno and warned by Josef Schnitzer to take it easy on the wet track, tried to stay in front of a closing Lauda (Alpina), missed his braking point, left the road and produced a double salto, landing on the roof, just missing a light standard. In the afternoon, BMW’s new bonus system (50.000 DM for a victory, 10.000 DM for place 1-3 on the starting grid) paid off since BMW at least forced Ford to go out again to claim the expected 1-2. Lauda (the only reason Alpina went to Brno) was third. In division 2, another 10.000 DM was paid to Pankl for second place behind Birrell. The division 1 race saw four Alfa’s in front followed by two Fiats. Autodelta had not withdrawn after the fatality, to keep title chances intact. Grano drove like a man possessed, getting as high as second before he had to retire, just like Dona, with gearbox troubles. Mike Parkes of Filipinetti was frustrated by the Fiat company, being not very helpful and slow in homologation questions - still no five speed gearbox homologated. For division 2 and 3, 3 warm-up laps were held, to give everybody an idea where the track was wet or dry. Fitzpatrick and Glemser choose slicks, the others intermediates. After 30 minutes, the Capri’s were in front of Fitzpatrick, then Birrell, Peltier and Pankl. Lauda was already missing: a valve rocker had broken. The order stayed the same until just before the end, when both Capri’s had to take on fuel. The windows were cleaned as well, unfortunately the emergency switch of Mass’s car was twisted, so Mass had to do a lap with a misfiring engine. First, the battery was replaced until the switch was found guilty. It was too late, Fitzpatrick had taken second. |
