While Opel had its debut of the big Commodore, the 3-liter BMW coupé was a on-starter since it was thought that the car was too heavy for the circuit. Two years later, things were quite different...

Stommelen’s Capri had been in trouble during practice, but nonetheless he went side-by-side with de Adamich in the Südkehre, only to stop a few kilometres further down the road. After three laps, the order was de Adamich, Hezemans, Glemser, Kauhsen with the new Steinmetz Commodore and Schüler. We had already lost Krebs and Christmann. More trouble for Ford: Werner lost time in the pits, Glemser’s car had a broken generator. Kauhsen got into trouble too; first the brakes, then gearbox troubles, then he had an excursion - he reached the pits only to withdraw.
The order remained the same for a while, de Adamich and Hezemans 32 seconds in front of Glemser, then Schüler, Schulze and Zeccoli, followed by the three Mazda’s.

In lap 8, Hezemans crashed at the Karussell, but was unhurt. Glemser’s battery was empty now, which was another retirement for Ford, so de Adamich and Schüler were in the lead, unchallenged.
After three hours, Fontaine retired the last works Capri, the Zakspeed Escort GT retired with a broken gearbox, Basche/Stuck had an engine failure with their BMW and von Hohenzollern retired with a broken engine mount.

After three hours the order was de Adamich, Schüler and one lap behind Katayama, Zeccoli and Katakura, the only change the next few hours being “Christine” who passed Katakura into third. An unscheduled stop did not lose the lead for de Adamich, who passed the finish just a little too early so he had to do one more lap. The last minutes of the race were tragic, since Herbert Schulze blew a tire on his last lap, left the road near Hatzenbach and crashed into a tree.
