All major works teams were there, including the increasingly fast Skoda team, here on home soil. Practice saw Hezemans fastest (although Huber was stopped by most teams as the quickest). At 12 o’clock the flag dropped and the field stormed away on the narrow, dangerous but beautiful track. Hezemans was leading, followed by Glemser and Galli. After a brief lead by Glemser, Galli took the lead in a risky manoeuvre. The Fords could not keep up, and halfway the race Galli’s engine cried enough, like Soler-Roig’s BMW. Mohr broke an oil pipe and retired, while Glemser had the same problem and was a frequent pit visitor, dropping back from third to tenth in the end. Abt, leading division 1, had blown a head gasket and had to pit frequently to fill his radiator. But the last time, 8 minutes before the end, his car would not start for a long time but finally he could start his last lap - Bobek’s Skoda had passed him in the meantime, getting a popular division 1 victory. Division 2 was won by Herzog and Hack (BMW), overall honours went to Hezemans. |
