Not only was the 20-lap Lombank Trophy Race an exciting ninth round of the British Saloon Car Championship, it was the end of the championship trail for the George Bevan entered Bill McGovern Sunbeam Imp. Despite a flat tyre and broken clutch the Pentastar product managed to finish and collect a final point tally of 70 versus Frank Gardner's 66 and Brian Muir's 62 points. On a record smashing spree, three class and the outright lap times were established, one by a margin of seconds.
Gardner and Dennis Leech in Ford Boss Mustang 302s set the pace until Leech retired from the lead with a blown gasket and Gardner was left with third gear, leaving Muir's Camaro Z28 to win; however, Gardner smashed the outright and class record by two seconds with a lap in 1.43,0 (92.62 mph).
Laurie 'hard luck' Hickman took a thoroughly deserved win in the 1301-2000 cc class in the BRM engined Escort TC and finished third overall. John Fitzpatrick took the works 1300 GT to a record breaking class victory and fourth outright placing. Mike Freeman won the tiddler's class after McGovern's 998 Sunbeam Imp had broken the class record and before the championship leading Imp suffered a flat rear tyre, eventually to finish second in class, being without a clutch from the start line.
